Have a look on the Transit NZ web site. I think there's days where access is open.
There's a post in the "desert road closure " thread that has a statement about being open to recreational users of the area.
Just come out today,wouldnt let the speed get up as some of the dig outs got big drops into them.More white utes with flashing lights than plant roamining around.
