I personally wouldn't know the river level situation, but before dropping down to the Taharua River if its in full flood, you could sidle anti clockwise around the river staying in the bush until you hit the Kaipo river and cross there to the Kaipo track as its normally shallow. Would add another hours walk I guess plus your in deer country so could hunt along the way.
Full flood… forget it!
I’ve been in there a few times at various water levels including full flood where I just turned around and walked out and walked in over Te Iringa as it’s not worth risking life or limb!
