    Te Urewera

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/3605...-national-park

What a complete F*ck up it was giving management of Te Urewera back to Tuhoe. They are still getting 2 million of tax payers dollars every year. Where is that money going? No accountability as to where it’s being spent. Sounds like there is no pest control happening at all.

It, IMO is a very sickening example of gross mismanagement over time, prii

preserve as far as possible the natural features and beauty of Te Urewera, the integrity of its indigenous ecological systems and biodiversity, and its historical and cultural heritage; and ( totally stuff the place )

well they are doing well are they not - what a joke - very empty words indeed - note historical well many of the huts burnt down one could argue were historical

“The indigenous and ecological systems and biodiversity of Te Urewera are preserved, and introduced plants and animals are exterminated”

TUT have had long enough to get their shit sorted, but haven’t. 2 million a year of taxpayers money that appears to have no accountability of where it’s going or what it’s spent on?

Everyone misses the point. The management of Te Urewera wasn't given back to Tuhoe. Te Urewere was given to Tuhoe. It has effectively ceeded and is no longer part of New Zealand.

It's not good seeing it mismanaged especially with taxpayers money but like you say it is their land.
Cut the funding and just hope they don't cut the access?
I for one will probably just head to DOC managed blocks instead.
Bit of a shame as reading Barry Crump as a kid I dreamed of big trips into Te Urewera.

The local iwi have ground shooters operating 5 days a week in the Raukumaras. Apparently it is inhospitable country. Well cullers were doing that for yonks before there was a new woke vocabulary. Ground shooting can never compete with aerial operations. Once the NW Ruahines were opened to aerial recovery it quickly spelt the demise of the old fashioned culler. That came from the mouth of Gary Sutton a ground based culler. Sure a chopper might not get all the animals but they are a more effective tool for animal control. No ground hunter can compete with a 500 hovering and having both shottie and 223 to use.

Then cut the funding. Why is the minister of conservation and the minister of government wastage mr Seymour not doing anything.
If the fundings cut then access will be cut but as I understand it the place is not really open and welcoming to outsiders now anyway and the infrastructure has been largely destroyed.

The Money would be better spent elsewhere on well run and managed best control programmes.
