Thread: Top of the South Day trips

Hey guys,

Just recently moved to Nelson and am currently going for my firearms license. Still got a while to go but in the mean time I'm dead keen to start going up in the hills with my binos and try and spot some animals / get the lay of the land. Obviously not giving away your spot X, what are some good locations around here where I could spend the day doing a bit of exercise and potentially see some animals? Saw another post which recommended Mt Arthur but not sure what access is like to Flora carpark for a 2wD vehicle. Was thinking maybe around Lake Rotoiti or the inwards lookout looking on Doc maps but but also have the same question about 2wD access. Any advice would be much appreciated.

There are plenty of day trips available in this area for a 2wd

Inwoods deer seem to be very shy, lots of goats though. 2wd would get up flora carpark last time I went. No idea on animal numbers though. Mount Owen is loaded with chamois so I’ve heard. Beebys knob has some deer, also fairly shy but I’ve seen a few there. Mole tops or Tiramea track would be better than rotoiti or rotoroa lakes. Lots of people traffic up the lakes keeps the deer rather shy. Lewis pass and mount sumner have good animal numbers. How fit are you is the real question, if you work hard enough you will find good numbers all over the show

Don’t be shy dude, just get out there. So many animals and the number are starting to get silly. Pm me if me if you want to get out. I go out nearly every weekend

I have sometimes been the only 2wd car (1300cc Corolla) at Flora carpark in winter snow without chains. I don't recommend it unless you have some snow experience but eminently doable.

Having said that the cullers have been through and it recently got the green rain right through to the Cobb.

Also having only been back up here a year I's still trying to figure out where the deer are too.

I don't go out at weekends though as I work Friday through Sunday and then 4 days off each week.

If you are new to hunting, it sounds like Deerstalkers up that way could well be worth a look into.....Certainly would put you into contact with others who may be able to help you out or provide pointers.....Their HUNTS course used to be good too but I may be a bit out of date there...

You can try the Cob dam area. Easy 2WD access.
