Nice spot mate.
shhhhhh.
Haven't wandered down there for close to 50 years.
Tracks non maintained so if you like pushing through 8ft high scrub, stinging nettle and bush lawyer its the go to :)
oh,so you took the easy way in then...... dont even bother trying to come in the other way unless you have got 12 or more hours.
@Bonecrusher did you bump into the toke blokes?
 Have a couple of times Hut is getting a substantial rebuild at the moment thanks to funding from The Back Country Hut Trust they flew 7 loads of materials in last Sunday
Yep.
My old man etc used to hunt it long ago. They got 27 deer in a day, all skinny and as small as goats. Was like walking a highway.
Regardless that uphill to the Plateau always got me. My old man put me on his back one day. Still reminds me of that small fact. I remind him I was but a baby…still.

the last roar my Dad hunted in there. Dad ,Phil,Ivan and Ron I think were in there all experienced hunters and with all the chopper activity they never saw a deer let alone shot one....that wouldve been late 70s....
its had a few green rains over the years which keeps numbers low.
Ive never pulled anything out of there Whirinaki yes which is slightly further in. The Ridge track is a serious challenge with an animal on your back got out of there at 11pm on a Sunday night with a three hour drive and work the next day noy so young but silly
Have never gone in from the Plateau, used to climb over from below the old South Waipunga hut. Area a bit like Te Hoe, a good climb out.
Glad to see it's still there. Haven't been through there for about 35 years. We used to do the track & hut maintainence.
Is the bivy on the ridge between the pine & Matuk still there ?
Be careful driving into the old Saddle Hut track, it's a bit treacherous to say the least...
