Thread: Range finders

What's everyone's experience with ranger finders? Anything to stay away from? Should I fork out for a little extra with the Angle Compensation? Is it worth it?

Get the best you can afford. You will have it for ages. I bought a Leica 900 scan back in 2006(?), still going strong. Angle compensation, or even just stating it would be good.

How good are the binos? What do they compare with? Ta.

Iv been looking into them for a while & was pretty set on getting a leupold seemly they are good but if you read a few reviews some say that to use most of the features on them & some of the others they are pretty hard to actually use , I just got a 2nd hand bushnell its got a few features on it but I cant figure it out , so im just using the range finder purely to get the distance then using the shooter app on my phone , read some good reviews on the sig sauer models .

suprisingly good.
way better than the first model.
for a third the price of the top end models they punch above their weight.
put it this way if I didn't have the flash set I have I would buy a set myself and probably will for my boys to use one day soon!

Got a second hand lieca without angle compensation, discovered the app recently so can use phone for the inclinometer instead of the old protractor, string and weight

Inclinometer , protractor !! I no the hunts courses have been around for a while but im thinking with all this new technology someone should put a course or 2 up for the ones that just don't get it , maybe call it the ADVANCED hunting course

Good write up on the Sig in NZ Hunter. Most other reviews rate them as well, being well up their with the Euro's

Yip get the best you can afford with angle compensation, no point fluffing around with angles when the device does it for you.

I have a leupold DNA 1000 thing that gives me true ballistic range. Its not going to range me a deer at 1000 yards but it will certainly get me a range on a deer at 5-600 which for me is heaps.

If I had more coin then a Leica 1200 or if money was no object then I'd be looking at the top end RF binos from Leica, Swaro and Zeiss

Had a bushnell one with angle compensation. Was ok although didn't always get a measurement. Very clear to look through though which was surprising. Mates Leica 1600 easily outperformed.

Just got the Sig Sauer basic 850 model, so far very impressed, haven't used in very bright light yet but have never failed to get a reading anywhere it's been pointed. If it does that in bright sunlight too it will easily outperform my mates Leica. It can give true ballistic range.

does anyone know who makes the Sig optics? surely it is an existing optics company making it for them, would be great to know for a quality comparison
