I have had both Hornady and CCI with split necks after firing but there does not seem to be any problem with accuracy or damage to the rifle. I have decided it is what is is and get on with it.
Early yesterday morning I shot a possum out of a tree in the garden. It to ended up with a split neck.

Yes I have had a few split 17 HMR possums also. They tend to split all over the place, some even leaked gas!

Probably tighter neck dimensions in Sako and Anshultz?
Less room for the neck to expand?

I tried some 20gr Hornady ammo. Didn't shoot as well in the Savage unfortunately. I think the 17hmr was designed for the 17 grain projectiles so your rifle may not like them?

Interesting thread re the splitting of 17 HMR cases. I had a Marlin 22 Mag for many years and never had a problem with it until one day I was checking the zero and noticed split shells. The brass would stick in the chamber and I had to dig it out with the point of a knife. I though it is a different caliber but the same type of problem. I think in this case it was a faulty batch of brass as it had never happened in the past with the ammo in question or other brands. The ammo was Winchester 40 gr HP in the grey box at the time. I have since sold the rifle but I shot thousands of rounds through it before that problem occurred.Name: split Winchester 22 Mag cases.jpg
