The bang I was more referring to was the result of having a CCI explode as the case ruptures

I made an enquiry to Winchester about the 17hmr cases splitting - after a couple of weeks I finally got a note back from a rep in Australia - seems they are not concerned -

We have had a number of people enquiring about 17hmr brass over time. Basicaly our quality control sector have done numerous testing on the 17hmr stuff. The conclusion was that it is just so necked down in the shoulder of the brass that it creates a “weak point”. We have been assured to quality control that the ammunition is safe to use and it is not going to affect accuracy. It is very well known in the shooting world that 17hmr brass splits necks. (whether it be Winchester product or not)
