Thread: 17HMR versus 22WMR?

Most of the shooting will be 100m but would like to reach out to 200m to kill gongs.

Would also appreciate recommendations about rifle and scope choices.

17HMR, 4 - 12 x scope, 0 - 130 mtrs just point and shoot, out to 200 with small adjustments.
Marlin 17 HMR bolt action, very accurate and love to shoot with dirty bores so not a lot of cleaning either.

Several of us on the forum are using the Marlins and they are highly rated.

@Padox , how have you managed to end up with dead Marlin 17's ? , mine has done a heap of work and is still working great and accurate as hell.

@viper we brought 2 of them 6mth apart and at about 18ths old they both started jamming shells in the breach sent them in to the gun smith and both badly pitted in the breach recons they must have sat in a container when brought in in moisture as he said that's not something u should see in a newish rifle rang H&f they didn't wanna know about it

Well that's shit mate and a real shame as they are great shooters, mines stainless so that helps . Yep at 18mths old H&F would not have wanted to know about it.
Re - barrelling would not be economic either.

@Dago i have just been through the same process on here in the last month. If you look back you will find my post. Ammo prices are about the same.
I ended up going with the 17hmr. Rifle and scope choice will come down to what you want to spend. There were a lot of 17hmr on the market here but not what i was after.
I have ended up putting my 3x9x40 of a .22 on mine and when i can afford to up grade i will be going to a twelve power or more. I personally don't like the nine power.
So far i have tried out of two different brands of ammo my gun like's the hornady 20gr but when next in town i will grab a different brand of the 17gr

Well writing this i just shot a magpie 100odd meters on the hill next to the house

Here's a great little deal on trademe right now. Wee heavy barrel Marlin 917V in 17HMR. Wooden stock, slightly older model which are better made, and with 3-9x40 Bushnell Banner. Good rimfire scope. All for $450-500. That's good.

Savage A17 not highly regarded here or overseas...eg on rimfire central. Other bolt action Savages better.

@greghud. Thanks for the demonstration - good video.

22 mag ammunition has improved a hell of a lot. It's personal preference now I think 17 is flatter shooting but more wind susceptible 22 keeps energy better past 100 m. Ammunition price is close to bulk 223 so it will depend on your circumstances and application weather you use either or a 223.

Had both calibers in Marlin bolt action.
17hmr easy to hit out to 150m but as most of my shooting was in windy locations it was really useless in any wind over 10kmh (its a very light pill for gongs, you won't see them move at 200m)
22hmr was less accurate at 150m but had less issues with the wind and could put down bigger critters e.g wallabies.

In the end I sold both, bought a 223 and never looked back. More put down, more range, cheap to reload and readily available ammo.

Ditto on the 223 mate...well worth the extra coin..... kept the 17,s,they still have great uses

Yes for above. Horses for courses. I use my 17 HMR heaps more than I use my .223. The .223 a lot of the time(for my circumstances) would be overkill.
