.22lr barrel break in and cleaning

    Hey Everyone,

I've recently purchased a .22lr barrel for my Blaser R8. This is the first new .22lr barrel that I have owned.

Given the cost/quality of the barrel I figure I'd better get things right.

What is the correct barrel break in and general cleaning procedure for a .22lr ?

    Thanks in advance,

    Rich

Get some boretech rimfire blend , follow the instructions and give a good clean to your barrel.

And then go and shoot it. See what ammos it likes best. Perhaps give it another good clean at 200 rounds and 400 rounds. See whateffect it has on its accuracy just after a clean and after you have seasoned the barrel at 50 rounds and at a 100 rounds.
Blaser barrels are generally pretty good out of the box .

There isn't one. Clean thoroughly before shooting. Then shoot. Don't clean the barrel again until accuracy suffers. Which might be never or 5000 rounds, or 500 depending on your rifle. Peak accuracy may also be after tens or hundreds of rounds.

So any requirement to clean in order to prevent rust etc?

Not in theory, but keep an eye on it in humidity conditions. Also monitor for lube/crap buildup in the extractor slot and action areas, and in the barrel. A careful use of a bore snake will generally be everything a .22LR needs, and its only excess lube that you should be having an issue with. There is the possibility of creating bulges with an excessive lube situation, circa old military training .22's but modern barrel steel is much better than the ww2 era stuff.

More barrels have been destroyed through crap cleaning technique and gear than any other reason.

Only reason most of my 22s get 'cleaned' is rust protection and 90% of that is the outside and around the action. Bore gets a wipe, for want of a better description before and after use- before is to remove any oil residue from rust prevention and after is to oil the bore so it does not rust....

I hear you on that count. I dont know when the last time was that I used mine- At the range maybe in the last couple years, but actually out hunting - that would be decade or maybe two. Its just not the one I grab. In saying that- it has been with me since the early 90s and is one of the most accurate 22LR I have ever had the pleasure of shooting. Probably because during the 90s I used it almost every weekend to hit 60-70 rabbits for cat food fora 'side gig...'. Now I want to take it to the range just to let it know iI still appreciate it.....

Remembering Lilja barrels are stainless, but either way definitive regarding break in.

Also, please write something up on here once you’ve had a couple bricks of ammo through it and had a chance to form some opinions on the R8 .22 kit.
