I've used a 270 as my first big-game centrefire since I started hunting, as that's what was in the cupboard.
I find there's nothing wrong with it, however there's not exactly anything right/great about it either. What I mean is there's more modern rounds that perform as well or better for less recoil, powder usage and muzzle blast.
If you're buying a rifle or have one already and 270 is the only choice it will be fine. If you're looking at a new rifle and have options I'd consider a 6.5 or 7mm of some sort. (Providing you could find ammo)
Just my opinion and I'll be the first to admit that 90% plus of the time anything from a 243 up will end in the same result.
