Thread: 270 shooters

When a friend said he wanted to give hunting a go, he asked what he should get. My immediate responce was .270 it will do everything you ever want in NZ.
I have had 3 in different disguises and has been said very forgiving for not quite on the spot shooting. It has had a bad rap for being a booter but that is down to stock design and noise mostly. Often negated by better recoil pad and or supressing.
9 years on my friend is still on the 60 odd rounds I reloaded for him, but quite a number of animals in amongst those shots fired.

This is right on the money. I'm sure the 270's bad rap for recoil is probably the figment of some gun writer imagination who needed to write something for a magazine article (probably at the same time a marketer was trying to launch a new round like 243 or something). Reinforced by some poor sod shooting his 270 with a poorly designed 60's style stock (think Parker Hale Delux) and no earmuffs at the range for sighting in.

The 280 and 7x64 are identical ballistically and neither of them have anything like the recoil reputation of the 270.

Exactly my experience open sighted parker hale or similar that a mate had.
Belted me and I thought bugger this.
Then I went to a Win FW 30-06 and it fitted loved it.
Still have one.
Fit makes a difference.
Remember a school camp Waipakihi and they had newbies including girls who for most might have been the first rife they had fired an old sporterised .303 with original butt plate.
What a prick of an introduction to shooting.

My .243 is really gonna hate to share, but I am about to start over again with .270, basic work horse load is going to be the 130 Speer Hotcor at 3100fps. Because I know that out to 400yds, that pill is a dependable deer killer. Be about my 6th or 7th .270, lost count, it's gonna have it's work cut out to keep the .243 down though.....

anything that walks Gods green earth mate......the SD is right up there with 200grn .30 cal and surprisingly,out to 300 yards trajectory isnt as bad as first thought...not that they get used past hundy....

Also at the moment it’s pretty easy to get ammo for them.

I've used a 270 as my first big-game centrefire since I started hunting, as that's what was in the cupboard.

I find there's nothing wrong with it, however there's not exactly anything right/great about it either. What I mean is there's more modern rounds that perform as well or better for less recoil, powder usage and muzzle blast.

If you're buying a rifle or have one already and 270 is the only choice it will be fine. If you're looking at a new rifle and have options I'd consider a 6.5 or 7mm of some sort. (Providing you could find ammo)

Just my opinion and I'll be the first to admit that 90% plus of the time anything from a 243 up will end in the same result.

Name them. Then name your comparative test evaluation parameters. Then publish your peer reviewed findings here. I want to see the science to back your claim.

Unless it is subjective opinion based on surfing the net for other peoples subjective opinions not based on scientific evaluation....

.270 with 150gr is only a touch above 200gr 308... It's a pussycat, a very hard hitting pussycat

I SEEM TO RECALL you were using a .270 win at one stage me ol mate......the cases are still getting used and the suppressor is too. seem to recall you never had trouble knocking animals over with it either.
IF Mr S shoots a big wap....will probably be shot with .270 anyway......

I had a lady who joined our club last year.

She would've been at most 65kg.

Had bought a T C-whatever bolt action model they make-
In 270win with a leupold freedom 3-9x40 and had a DPT can on the end. For a cheaper setup it was surprisingly nice.

I coached her through sighting it in which was rather easy. She couldn't believe the lack of recoil and she hadn't shot suppressed centrefire either prior to this.

Got it zeroed to be 1.5inches high at 100y which makes for a 200 zero with factory Winchester 130gr PowerPoint.

Then proceeded to get her to ring the gong at 270y multiple times. She's since shot a few deer and loves it.
I've shot it and other suppressed 270s since. Recoil wise it's less than a 7mm08 and a different type of recoil.

Go grab the 270 and pop a suppressor on you'll be right

the new tipped coreloct should be interesting to use.
