    300 blackout

Hey team just got a 300 blackout going to go get some ammo for it any advice? Would like some sub loads to do some close range goat shooting but also would like to give it ago on some deer so will get some normal loads to. Run Hornady ammo through all my other rigs I have so usually gravitate to them as they usually its on point and drops them on the spot. Also would like to look at some reloading but don't have any kit yet something to start grabbing in the near future but any advice would be good to.

I've written quite a few posts about Hornady Sub-X. It's shit and you're definitely going to end up wounding animals if you don't make well placed head/neck shots, plus I've had quite a few of them going supersonic, so the worst of all worlds. You may as well use cheaper subsonic ammo if you're going for head shots. On the supersonic side, Hornady FTX are absolutely devastating. No complaints there and I would be happy to use them on smaller deer species. Be aware that much of the 300BLK ammo available isn't designed for hunting, so choose carefully.

Thanks for the feedback definitely will not be going with the sub x . definitely will be spending alot of time at the range getting to know it's limits. Definitely neck and head shots got some night vision for it and a private block so should be able to get to the 50 to 100m mark for the deer. Any other distances I will use my 7mm remmag.

Do a search on @tikka 's posts, as I recall he's shot a lot of game with a 300blk. Cheers

Before covid, one guy I knew went to pig hunting in a block, found one, not very big say 40kg since I gutted that pig. Full mag 300blackout from AR platform wouldn`t stop the pig in close range, another two shots, finally end the game. For me, shooting a 300 blackout is no big difference than shooting 7.62x39

If you're talking about subsonic ammo, I'm not surprised. Otherwise, it depends. In terms of energy, but not ballistics, supersonic 300BLK is similar to .223. As mentioned above, FTX rounds are devastating to the point that meat damage is my main concern. Somewhat ironically, I've gone back to head shots when possible.

If you truly want to run hunting subsonics in a 30cal the Leigh Defense 168gr controlled fracturing is the way to go but they are expensive and your going to need someone to reload for you. They kill really quickly with minimal tracking needed as long a shot placement is good.

I've been using them the last 5-6 years on some big reds and boars.
There's a kiwi guy on YouTube that uses them in his 308win.

Maybe to save the OP some effort, I tried to get some subsonic ammo with Lehigh projectiles put together by a commercial operator. No one wanted to take my money.

Just be aware to use some of the specialist projectiles you will generally need a 1-8 twist barrel or faster.

Dean Maisey xan supply Lehigh projectiles

I think the subx 190 is great but 50m is too far

I set my limit at about 40m and am far more comfortable at 20m

Know your trajectory out to your max distance and know where you need to put the bullet

Iv shot tons of pigs with mine and Its my favorite rifle by far. think of it like bow hunting but with a rifle, stalk closer and predict where the animal will go next and be ready with an ambush

the subx 300blk kills better than my 44mag subsonic and is far more accurate

the amount of energy you are throwing is pathetic so make sure you dont miss

If you site for 30m with subs you will find the 130s will be point of aim at about 130 which means if you need to make a rushed shot or a shot out to about 150m its a center shoulder shot out that far without thinking

great caliber but be prepaired to walk away from a shot if need be if you are not confident in it doing the business or use a supers

I put my shots in the brain given the choice

"head" isnt enough of a distinction Its either an earhole shot from the side or a cross from ear to opposing eye from the front

Yep, just thought I'd clear that up in case anyone thought Sub-X were suitable for classic heart/lung shots as advertised.
