Why do it? Because it's Fun! Don't care for the records etc. Would I purchase a Cheytac if I had the dosh? Of course.
The thing is if these Guys had the right chamber, barrel twist & length they could shoot a bigger bullet with a higher BC much faster & further

Everything is relative...
Kinda depends on where a projectile for a particular chambering goes trans-sonic and how much further beyond that point you can shoot consistently... So 1600yds with a 308 may well be more "impressive" than what these guys achieved.
The more I do long range and extreme long range shooting, the more I believe that group shooting at distance is a much higher indicator of skill than a single hit. To put 10 out of 10 shots into a 2 MOA group at 1000yds to me shows significantly more skill than "groups" containing 1, 2 or 3 shots out of 10 (or even more).
Just my view, and your mileage may vary

dont get your panties in a twist gibo -its just my opinion with a little humour from my POV. each to their own .actually i thought this forum was about free expression .
They arnt twisted mate and I wasn't really having a go at you. I often hear comments from guys who do shoot ELR but are reluctant to share for fear of mockery or just cant be arsed with the negative feedback. Those of us that are interested miss out due to this. Guess that was all I was trying to say.
no hard feelings.Ive more thAn a passing interest ,having extensive documentation on the originals -the canadian sniping det who set the record distance for hits in Afghanistan ,.very bloody interesting yarn that .course record since breoken by a pommy sniper from the household cavalry div also against taliban in afghanistan.
Incidentally I have whilst in the TF seen an open sighted SLR used to drop a target at a measured 700m.The shooter was renowned as a crackshot with the SLR.
