Which factory ammunition brands do you stay clear of personally and what are your bad experiences?
i had awful experience years back with "falcon" 12g as the brass expanded on firing making extraction impossible though i hear its improved
remington ammo 22lr was filthy burning crap
federal works well in 223 but not too consistent in velocity
Remington Viper, went to use a 500 pack that had been in the cupboard for 15 years, can't get any to fire, have tried 4 different rifles.
Long time ago now, but Stanley used to make 22 ammo. Had some hangfires from a pkt.
Stirling solid 22 ammo ran very dirty through my Stirling 20P. Had to clean it after every packet or so, to avoid jams.
Now and again people have failed primer strikes with 22 Remington Golden Bullet , but haven't had that happen to me.
Fiocchi 9mm have had a run of split necks.Whether it was just an isolated batch sold locally or NZ wide, I don't know.
I've never had any luck with PMC. Tried the 223, 308 and 7.62x39 flavours and they've all shot badly. The 223 was really bad.
Hunting and Fishing's re-man 223. Mostly ADI 5.56 brass but with the odd bit of Lake City in there. All different years on the headstamps, some with 1.5mm flash holes, some with 2mm flash holes, trim lengths all over the place, inconsistent crimps, charge weights all varying. 4MOA from my bolt gun, if I was lucky.
On the flip side, Speer .223, Nickel Cased, 64gr Gold Dot (the LE stuff) has shot really well and is basically just as cheap.
Federal 308 shoot ok but the brass was crap for reloading, also their 223 brass is pretty shit too
For my older rifles I avoid S+B and PP.
With the first it's giving flat primers in both 303 and 8x57.
I know the rifles can Handel it and all but seeing flat primers in old classics like that doesn't sit well with me.
I got a bunch of russian steel cased .22 off a mate
It is real click bang pop stuff and the lube rubs off all over your fingers.
I blasted a couple of hundred through my 10/22 to get rid and my red dot shat itself!!!
Ha ha....
MARK
I find S&B BRASS is as hard as the hobs of hell ....putting it through resizing dies just about bends press handle.....we didnt bother picking it back up after one reload. has issues with PMC with misfires years back, pity as the soft projectiles worked great and it was accurate....china sport in 7.62x39mm found one where the steel case had a piece approx 2mmx2mm folded inside case neck and it blew out when it was fired....one would guess the neck tension on that round caused a rather high spike in pressure!!!!
remington hypersonic shotgun amunition....fark my ears ring,my shoulder is sore and Im developing a nervious twitch just typing that...horrible gun wrecking shit, the only time Ive ever short shucked the pump and did it 3-4 times using up the 1/2 box of the green crap Id been given. DONT DO IT....
No one has mentioned anything about Belmont’s, must be a good sign? I have only heard good about them so far
yup I've put 500 rounds of Belmont through various 223s and only had 1 bad one that must of been a reduced charge weight as it went off like a sub. 1 out of 500 I won't cry about when the other 499 shot perectly and sub moa outta all the rifles I tried them in.....maybe I got lucky
after that I put a dozen over the chrono and they were pretty consistent can't remember the speed off the top of my head but it was faster than I expected
S&b 22 hornet the flash holes are off center and broke decapping pin
Yep
Fiocchi 9mm have to be the worst 9mm. A friend bought 1000 and at least 3/4 of them split on firing in multiple pistols (we tried to confirm if it was just his pistol, but it was the ammo) the ones that did not split on firing split if you tried to reload them. I wont touch any of that junk now!
17M2 ammo (all made by the same company? even though it has multiple brands) splits at the neck over time.
They are not off center but actually are a smaller diameter than all other .22 hornet brass.. its not a std sized hole and even the smaller Redding die pins get jammed in them.
I cut a drill bit shank to size to use as a decapping pin for them then drill them out to the std size. The brass itself once anneald is actually quite good and the rim thickness is thicker and more consistent than many other brands meaning consistent headspace and better accuracy.
Highland in 308 wouldn't chamber properly now stick to Remington Corelocks
Can’t go wrong with corelokts, they’re very user friendly
Remington and Magtech, I AVOID BOTH.
The only centrefire misfire I have had was a Remington corelokt. It was the first round out of the box and the first (attempted) shot from the rifle in several years, so I can't say for sure that it was the ammunition at fault.
Can't agree with that. I have a very accurate .223 varmint rifle that has lived exclusively on one large batch of FC brass. This brass has been reloaded myriad times and has never been annealed. An extremely small proportion have needed to be discarded from neck splits. It gets trimmed only if it really needs it. Here is a 300yd group shot (on a F-Class electronic target) about a month ago with it

Nothing wrong with Federal, good middle of the road brand to test a rifle with and there premium match 308 I've struggled to match with reloads.
Just ordered 1000 rounds of Belmont with the 77 hpbt projectile, hope its ok? Price is just too tempting.
My stirling 14 p bolt action .22lr eats up remmington gold bullets from the bucket load.1400 rounds a bucket and I'd only get one misfire.:D
.
I don't recall ever getting a misfire in my stirling 14, but I never ever put that many rounds through it. Its had quite a few bricks along with other various packets but don't recall it not working because of the ammo. Mechanically the sear engagement stuffed me around for a bit until we tigged up the bolt, after that no dramas.
Tropo get yourself down to Barry fosters outdoor equipment in blenheim rd -try barrys Hull and solway magnum 12g ammo out-bloody cracker fodder for trap and field-solway magnum 34gm 3"would even give donald trumpa hard on -its stops everything i let loose on.
that DTL100/300trap ammo-just the gnats nuts.
ammo to avoid -remington subsonics more poof than an exploding feather pillow-possums die of laughter as it skips up the road to shake hands
eley 12g ammo bloody good but 150%filthy-dirtier that GCs kremen ammo!
Finally put my BAR Mark 3 Semi auto/308/Vortec viper scope together.....
Using ..Magtech first defense sniper rounds ,168 grain......Sierra bullets, hollow point.......mate,great ammo for the price, and the groupings are tight......
Yeah mate...the Belgium rifles hold their prices very well......unfortunately mines not stamped...Made in Belgium........I’m bloody happy with this rifle and the way/feel it has,.....a very smooth action, nice weight, and the Magtech rounds suit the rifle just fine
Most Browning guns were made in Belgium by Fabrique Nationale (FN) until the mid 1970s when some production was shifted to Miroku in Japan. Today's Browning firearms are made in either Belgium, Portugal, Japan or in the United States.
Mate wore out 2 barrels in a bar 308 in the forestry. He loved it
Up until lately where the new AR's in 308 are getting light, it would probably be the only 308 semi I'd get.
Yeah mate,I’ve heard those grumbling as well.....most think it’s unfounded.....I have the BAR Mark 3 semi auto....I was told if I ever wear the barrel out,to bring it back and they would replace it for free......Browning at least has a reputable customer service ethic....
Yeah but he actually wore it out. He was culling and doing pest destruction for the forestry back in the early 80's. It was round count alone that made him rebarrel it not quality. if I could shoot out a barrel and get it replaced for free that would be a sweet deal.
