Any point to suppressing a 30.06?

So I have this Tikka 3006 that has my ears ringing for days after firing a shot in the bush without hearing protection. I would like to have something quieter, so my options seem to be to suppress or trade down to a smaller cartridge and suppress that.

I have noticed that some people who make suppressors hedge a bit on the effectiveness of cans for larger calibers (eg, 10% noise reduction)...Is it even possible to effectively suppress rifles around the 3006 range (where 'effective' means taking away the roar but not the supersonic crack)? And if so, would someone like Canterbury Gunworks be able to do it?

Suppress away Zippy. No less reason to suppress the 30-06 than any other rifle. The amount of powder burnt will determine effective volume (read physical size) for the unit. It will add length too, so it may need to go to the chop shop to retain the same balance.

Zippy I'm pretty sure that some supressers can inter change ie 30 cals , keep the can so you will only loose the cost of the thread . If you not happy then get a 308 ? .

That's the one Munsey. The calibre only dictates the size of the hole through the suppressor, so: .30 cal is .30 cal.

It will still make a big improvement.
-You might like to consider a suppressor with a larger internal volume. Such as 'Gunworks Maximus'.

Zippy - every rifle I own is suppressed. Your hearing is precious, suppressed rifle often allow multiple shot's before game is spooked, if you hunt with a dog it doesn't go deaf as well, oh & did I mention that they are quiet :ORLY: Apart from giving your barrel a chop to make sure it doesn't become cumbersome there are no negatives. Gunworks & HRE are the most popular however there are now other NZ made brands fast catching up in popularity. with gunworks the suppressor size for the 30-06 and 308 will be exactly the same. It will stop that ringing you get after the shot and also take away a heap of the boot. if you use it as your main gun then yes Id suppress it. have a think about final length before you suppress it, cutting it before they suppress costs nothing. shorter barrel means it will be less muzzle heavy and overall shorter. which are both great

I wouldn't think twice about supressing my rifles, go for it! all mine are and in my experience I've found it actually makes em shoot a little bit better too, and It also cuts the recoil back abit not to mention.

Iv just suppressed a 243, the first(apart from 22lr) suppressor Iv ever had tho I have had a bit to do with them over the years.

From what Iv had to do with them they take it down to around 22mag noise or slightly more.This is subjective tho they sound quieter shooting over open ground than say shooting into a gully or valley where you hear the sound coming back.

It might be worth mentioning that hunting with electronic earmuffs on would be an option ( don't jump all over me guys, its just an option ! ).
The curse of course, is being able to bear wearing them for any length of time, but they do give great ear protection, enhance your hearing at the same time, and if you are worried about $$$$'s they are cheaper than suppressors.
Having said that, all my rifles wear suppressors. . .

Electronic muffs are great for S/R comps I do know that much!

Gunworks suppressed my 3006 with the alpine model,best thing ever ears love it and the shoulder does when sighting in i load 165 bt and it feels like me 223 recoil wise .Do it u will not regret it.

Let us know if & when you go ahead. It will be interesting to see your thoughts. Aside from adding a little extra weight & length there are no negatives.

My .280 (not far different from your 3006) has a gunworks suppressor and it makes it 6000 times nicer to shoot, Both in noise and recoil reduction.
