Thread: AR15 shell cases not extracting

I was shooting some tin w my NEA AR15 last weekend.

After about ten shots the cases weren't extracting. I'd need to manually work the extract lever (correct lingo?) to extract. The cases would feel quite hard to pull out.

It would cycle ok for a couple more shots then jam up again

Am I doing something wrong??

I'm new to using my AR, be gentle please!

It is .223 cal, I'm using the h&f branded 55gr ammo

Make sure the gas key is securely attached to the bcg is it a factory rifle

What's your setup? Barrel length, suppressor? Does it lock back on an empty mag?

brass ammo or steel?
any marks, dents etc on extracted cases ?

Ammo is dirty but not damaged.
It has a suppressor fitted. I'll need to measure the barrel (duh I know)

The bolt was extracting then closing on last shot

Gas key attached???? Ooooh maybe I've missed something there? The gas key knob moves maybe a little but not sure what it should move like

The h&f stuff is brass, it's their recycled stuff I think.

I'm not sure if it's factory......

I'm suspecting I need to spend some time face to face with someone who knows these things better than I lol

It shouldn't move at all

The gas key should not move at all both cap screws holding it in place should be staked to prevent them coming loose.

That said @marky123 had an issue with his new NEA where the caps crew head broke.

Also give the chamber and bolt carrier Group a bloody good clean as they get quite dirty, especially with a suppressor attached.

as above the gas key should be more rigid than a bishop at a boy scout convention. disassemble the rifle and look at the chamber. look for abrasions and "rough bits".
if its a new gun, take it back.
if its not, come back to here

SiB take heart as you are doing better than me by knowing what a gas key even is, unless it is the pokey outey bit on top of the slidey doodad.

The gas key is the part that's screwed onto the top of the bolt carrier group if its loose it won't be getting enough gas to operate properly the gas doesn't go where its supposed to go is it a new gun
