An assault rifle is a rifle used by assaulting infantry to assault a position static or mobile and can maintain supressive fire on a position from moderate distance. Generally fully auto capable.
The Sturm was definitely the first closed bolt assault rifle.
Arguments can be made for the Thompson and M1
Its how I remember it being explained during my stint as a grunt.
