Auckland shooting club for someone applying for FAL

Gday I have a really good mate wanting to apply for his FAL license but before that he'd like to join a club to help him with his competency and knowledge of proper firearms basics and sighting etc etc. Any recommendations would be appreciated cheers.

One option, probably, is NZDA South Aucklaned Branch. If he joined he might be best doing one of the Hunts courses conducted by NZDA to get firearms basics education. This branch aslo has use of a range but I don't know the schedule.

    ASC hands down.

Easily the nicest range I've been to period. Ok I'm biased I'll exclude my home club. Pm me and I can put you in touch with the right people.

MSRC in Howick is great for new shooters. Especially those looking to improve their shooting. It is open every Wednesday night and im there pretty much every week. Doors open a bit before 6. Safety briefing for new shooters is held at 6:30. You need to attend the briefing the first time only.
    90R Wellington street Howick.

Eftpos or cash is fine, there are club rifles and ammo available for hire/purchase.

If your bringing your own rifle, its generally 22lr only, but if you show up with a 17hmr or 22mag or something to sight in / practice with, that is fine also. No centerfire rifle.

Its a very good and well run club, the target we shoot is difficult enough to keep the pros coming back but not inaccessible for new shooters.

@SixtyTen can you explain more about MSRC please. Is it target shooting with jackets and gloves or can you just use a normal scoped .22. Reason i ask is my daughter and i would like to join too but we not intersted in jackets and gloves prone shooting.

No jackets or gloves. MSRC stands for Manukau Sporting Rifle Club. So most people are shooting scoped 22lr bolt actions such as CZ's, Tikkas and Savages. Also a lot of people shooting semis. The targets are pretty small and designed for scopes, but you can shoot iron sights if you wish.
Basically any rimfire rifle is fine to shoot. We have even had Airsoft guys showing up wanting to zero scopes.

The standard target we shoot is 50rds from all 4 positions. 16rds prone, 9rds sitting, 15rds kneeling and 10rds standing. Designed to improve a shooters practical shooting ability in a hunting or field shooting situation.

Children over the age of about 6-7 are welcome.

I highly recommend coming along if your thinking about it, it's an excellent place for new shooters and also for seasoned shooters to hone their positional shooting.

Is there anything like the MSRC in North Auckland/ rodney area . Sounds just what I am looking for but I live in Warkworth and just to far to travel.

The only other indoor club in Auckland I'm aware of is the Waitakare small bore club. They do a sporting rifle night similar to MSRC. Range is in Swanson. The North Auckland Deerstalkers range (not the one in riverhead forest) is also very good and well run. Expensive to visit if your not a member, but worth joining just for access to the range.

MSRC and HSRC are two different clubs run from the same facility. They shoot on different days of the week and different targets. Both are run by top people.

WSRC runs from a facility in west Auckland, that facility also houses at least 3 other clubs, including the smallbore target shooting club.

NZDA Auckland and NZDA North Auckland are both in the Riverhead area. Their fees for casual shooter are higher but they have much longer range and you can shoot centrefires.
