Shooting red stags......what is the average distance in North island vs. South Island.

well that's a curly one.....bush stalking hobbits would probable AVERAGE 40 yards...some at 5 and some at 150
open country from 100- as far as you can shoot
personally after 40 ish deer there are only 3 that I couldn't have/would have struggles to hit with open sighted .30/30 I started out with.

I hunt Nth canterbury tops and have kept records of the distances I've shoot deer/animals from 2008. I've shot 35 animals in that time and the average range is 347yds. The furtherest was 638yds.

That's very cool @stug. Do you keep a notebook/journal? I'd love to see how it's set out - photo maybe? (without you giving away locations of course)

I use an excel spreadsheet. Just write a few formulas and it calculates avg distance also have it to record how many deer at each range (hundred yards) and each year.

I've kept a record in a note book for the last 6 years. North Island. Average is 172 yards for 70 mixed deer. Last 10 average 155 yds. Last 4 during the roar average 105 yards (300,90,15,15,). Bush, bush edge and tops. Not counting Tahr in the SI.

It's just a spiral bound note book. It has all of the locations in it too I will see if I can work out how to black the locations out of a pic of a couple of pages.
I put in it when, where, range, rifle, projectile. Details of the deer seen and where, and details of the deer I shot (if I did). And who I was with (if anyone) and details of their kill if they got one. I record every trip.

I also keep a blog (on another site) of everything I get with my dog.

Stug.....what caliber and what kind of rifle do you mostly use?

Most were shot with 7mm rem mag, a couple with 7 RUM, now using 7 SAUM.

I'm in Canterbury too, so mainly in open country. last 6 deer:
305yds
475yds
160yds
387yds
265yds
405yds

While I enjoy time in the bush, the tops are so spectacular!

In the bush 40m average and tops 280m. I used to have hunting log books with moon, weather, time and shot placement but now only a reloading log books, batchs count with chrony range data etc.

Stug....from your experience how do these 3 7mm Mag calibers compare in terms of effectiveness?

I had the 7mm mag the most and had consistent one shot kills with it. The 7 RUM didn't kill as well witha the couple of animals I shot with it. But I feel that the projectiles I used were too hard. I used the Berger hybrid 180gr.
My 7 SAUM is only doing 2800ish but kills well, but doesn't dump them on the ground like the 7mm mag.

The posters question is a open ended question... Myself as I hunt the bush and clearings its predominantly sub 200 usually within 50y.then if I opt for the tops down here well it's a question of how far can you anchor a animal. This also reflects my calibre of choice-308-.
