Hi Guys so I got a 3006 a while back pluss 2 packets of winchester 150 grn...the gun hated them wouldn't group at all so I got a pac of 165 hornday sst & 180 sp federals to try , tested them today to my relief gun likes them both especially the 180,s nice wee group at 100 so the question is if im wanting to stretch the barrel a bit & try to hit deer out to 500 do I go for the slightly more accurate heavy rounds or should I go for the flatter shooting 165,s which according to the info on the packet is doing:
    hornaday 165 grn , 2960 muz +1.6 at 100 , 0 at 200 , -6.9 at 300 , -20.1 at 400 & 40.1 inch drop at 500.
Federal , 0 at 100 , -4.2 at 200 , -15.3 at 300 that all the info federal give ..iv got a dial for the scope coming & bipod so was thinking perhaps whilst the flatter shooting option would make sense so long as I no the distance shouldn't be a prob ?
I only fired 6 rounds out of each pac the first shots are usually not as good as the last so will go back in a few days to be a bit more conclusive about what it likes the best no doubt by that stage il have 80 cases & want to do some reloads ...then il be back to square 1

The projectile needs to reliably expand or fragment once it has slowed down, so it can't be too tough. In this regards the sst would be better than the soft point.
    Even better try an amax.

Dont trust the info on the packet, it wont match what you are getting. Either shoot over a chrony, or preferably verify it by shooting to those ranges and making a drop chart.
