You need to go a little way up before you can hunt. From memory on the right going up you nearly need to be where the track starts to climb up towards the saddle.
Yeah, hunting area on the right (true left) starts about 5km from the car park just past McLeod Stream.
You can access the right side much earlier by crossing the Cass River and going up Pylon Gully or Misery Creek.
Hunting area on the left (true right) starts almost as soon as you pass Grassmere Stream? just past the Lodge road.

Chased a good stag around in there for a few years. Only saw him twice, once too far away for a shot and once with a nearly full head of velvet. I often dream of that stag.
I'm drawn to the mountains and the bush, it's where life is clear, where the world makes the most sense.
I work up that way. Not over-hunted, but from a local DOC source, best bet is to keep going beyond the city folk who take their rifles for a walk. Some good animals out the back.
Anyone been up here recently(last couple years). Does it hold a few animals? Looking at heading up to the tops from the Cass Saddle and checking out the top basins of Long Valley Stream and Doubtful creek etc
