Figured it’s about time we had a lighthearted “My big one is better than your little one” tussle.
Was the author drunk or have dementia?
Check out the best numbers you can find for windage and energy for both cartridges at 600, 700 and 800m.....
I think you'll find the 7RM a decent step up.
Better comparison 6.5prc v .270win v 270wsm
Yep 243 is always the answer
My fast twist 243 with a 115Berger?:pacman::thumbsup:
243 for when you have to ask "will this hurt me to fire mummy?"
long live the 7mmRM
Which I don't have.never found a good enough reason to go below 6.5mm but reason has never been much of a barrier for me:O_O:
So what actually defines a cartridge a magnum other than tacking the word magnum on the end of it
The design of the case. The belt reinforces the base of the case to run higher pressures without blowing the case where it comes out of the chamber.
It comes from the original Weatherby line of cases I think late forties
I have read that old time definition, pre-Weathrby etc, was length of cartridge especially when related to bolt actions. Eg. Short (308), Standard (30-06) and Magnum (375H7H). As noted above, is the 7mmRM really a magnum because Remington called it that to lure more buyers with the hype.
It's actually Winchester's fault they released the 264 magnum in around 1956 then did the 300 and 338 on the same case therefore Remington using the same case for a 7mm in 1960(?) called it the magnum.
222 magnum doesn't have a belt
Yeah but was made to counter the 223 during trials for the AR15
and .277 is THE TRUE 7MM not like the .284 pretend wannabies....dont believe me???? chuck set of calipers on projectile and tell me which is closer to 7mm.....
the belts were important for headspacing on the older cartridges as well I think
Sooooo, a magnum has to have a belt, but wouldn't "belted" in "belted magnum" be a redundant adjective? What about the mightiest of magnums, the .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire? 44 Rem Mag etc.
Nah .277 is only a 270 sluggard. and 10thou to small to be a 7mm :pacman:
You do realise that the only reason the 270 came to be was becos the yanks couldn’t bring themselves to admit that the Germans got it right with their 7mm. BTW the original parent cartridge is a arguably better all round proposition - the trusty old 3006. In the ackley improved version it’s not that far behind the 300 magnums
My understanding has always been Magnums have a bigger case head diameter than 'standard' case heads based on the 8 x 57 size. Because of it's outstanding performance and service to improving the life of mankind, the 270 was recently granted 'Honorary Magnum' status and newly produced cases are now stamped 'HM'270 Win
Cover your bases own both, they are both great performers in the field. The 7mm has a better selection of projectiles but t=in saying that there are more than enough to make the 270 work.
The 280/284 etc BORE diameter is .277 and the 270 is BORE diameter of .270 So that means 7.035mm is closer then 6.858mm
will type this S L O W L Y measure the projectile....
A Magnum is also a Large bottle of Champagne.
Of the kind usually squirted over other men by 270 Shooters at Mardi Gras and holiday resorts where only men are invited.
Well played norsk !
Magnum originally meant extended case ie the .357 magnum is the extended case version of the .38 special.
The belts on belted magnums were initially put on the .375 H&H magnum (rimless nitro express originally) as it was believed there was not enough shoulder for reliable head spacing.
They then became marketing tags as used by Weatherby, Winchester and Remington who used the .375 as a parent case for their subsequent magnum cartridges. And thus the “belted magnums” were born.
This is similar to the “express” tag used for marketing the latest and greatest big game cartridges at the turn of the 20th century.
Magnum is mostly and American thing, European cartridges don’t get the magnum tag despite case size and velocity ie a 7x64 isn’t called a 7x57 magnum [emoji23]
We have gone a away from the magnum marketing now and most new cartridges don’t get the tag despite being very fast ie Nosler, Ruger, Dakota etc.

And I wonder where the .270win would be without Jack O’Conner...?

I’d pick my 7mm RM Before my .270 for a trip up on the Kaweka tops any day!
Kaweka tops = Magnum Country
That’s a terrible article, firstly because of the opinion based manner that the information is presented and secondly because everyone knows 7mm is king hahah :D
Hey, here’s an idea!
Blow out the 270 to 30 calibre,,
Name it something like oh 30-06...
THEN you’ll have a REAL cartridge!
