    Good idea, nothing wrong with a home made unit when a shop one is $90+ IMHO.

    Problem with a rest is its different to your hand and sling, so for ammo testing yes sure, for getting close yes sure but you may find adjustment is needed when onto a sling. This is especially noticeable for a no4, no3 might be OK.

    What I do is sling up with glove and have a wooden block I made up the right height and I rest the back of my gloved hand lightly on the wooden block.

    The rear sight unit apature I find sucky so Im looking for a modern unit that comes with the PH thread or an adapter.

    Take a careful look for play in the unit in case that introduces problems, they do wear.
