Interesting question. I had a look at the NRANZ rules, and nothing obvious about it being outside the rules.
In T2.1 they mention manually loaded action
and in T2.7 Magazine: In countries where magazines are legal, a magazine will be permitted provided it is
only used as a loading platform for single rounds.
Interesting. I ask as I have a .223 ar that would seem to be up to the job,at lest to try it out.
Mags definitely legal here, seen several FTR rifles with them.
What twist Res ? You'd need 1:9 or preferably 1:7 to stabilise heavier projectiles to get out beyond 600yds.
The Americans run some interesting AR based space guns in their high power comps.

I think you will find a requirement to be single fed, you can get special mags that offer this
