Foggy glasses or piss poor eyes

After missing a chance at another stag this morning Ive got to ask what people with failing eyesight use. I need glasses to see at distance ( from 10 ft on) or else things are a bit blurry. I need them to properly identify my target.
In the past Ive managed to shoot a few by dropping the glasses off ( on string around neck thing) on seeing a deer ,then shooting. The last two have been too quick for me and Ive shot and missed while still wearing glasses. ( I ll blame them , lol)
Questions are : do those of you with piss poor eyes at distance adjust your scope and sight in wearing them or what??
They’re really starting to F.. me off especially after this mornings effort.When you creating abit of steam/ glasses getting dirty from sweat etc when you finally sneak in close , lift the gun and cant see shite you can see what I mean
Mostly hunting from 30-200 meters. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have this issue also, pain in the arse if you've got a hot face and trying to use binos too, you can buy anti fog spray used on motorcycle helmet visors, I use this on my glasses it helps a lot but wouldn't use it on my binos cause I don't know if it would damage the coating....
My scope diopter is adjusted for use with glasses on, my binos I adjust for using without glasses as I ust can't get the eye relief right to use my binos with glasses on....

I have same issues as you. I set my rifle scope to work with my glasses on or contact lenses in.
Lately I have taken to wearing contact lenses I use for clay bird shooting (slightly over corrected for better distance vision) and carry cheap reading glasses for the up close stuff

You could try a 'side focus' scope. Very common with target shooters.
I had a Leupold 45x, now a Big Nikko...both are side focus.
Quick to do for focussing on a target at different ranges.
'Field Target' guys would do it all the time (even the rimfire and air rifle guys).
Might help you with not having to wear glasses.
I shoot indoors benchrest and use a side focus scope as I too suffer from fading eyesight (I blame all this 'daylight saving ' stuff. It's wearing out our eyes quicker).
For a snap shot in the bush? Maybe not so good, but set your focus to match your surroundings and you may be surprised at what you can see clearly.

my optomitrist n I discussed this last time I visited....yeah nah mate we will get you some contacts when time comes...was his answer.
reckon a fella could put up with them for hunting only....one advantage of either contacts of glasses,your eyeball has tiny bit of protection from twigs....poked myself in eyeball couple of weeks back and it took best bit of an hour to come right,my older bro went one better and dug eyeball out with poke from stick!!!!!

Thank guys for your thoughts . That stag this morning will haunt me but thankfully its not just me that has this issue. Danny , Ill try sighting in with the new glasses Ive got and adjust the scope to suit. I think the old ones are a bit shot which isn’t helping. Look at it this way , It cant get any worse. Kiwi , a new scope , Ive got a few now that I dont use, haha. , good thought but I love poking around in the bush , not really a tops hunter and theres less climbing ( but theres less time to adjust things), cheers anyway.

yeah I have the same issue I need glasses for long distance. I have found I need to have the scope magnification down a bit while I'm wearing them otherwise it's a bit blurry. Ironically I can see fine through the scope without glasses but need them on to see definition when I'm walking around.

I had this issue. I still wear glasses full time, however now wear contacts when hunting and or shooting.
Still struggle in low light regardless of glasses or contacts, but at least I have gotten past the fogging issue.

I've worn glasses for over 50 years, cant do the contact thing. I now have varifocals, look at the close stuff like this keyboard through the bottom of the lense and look out the window at the geese with the top of the lense. You dont even think about it, it just happens. Go get a good pair of glasses, put 'em on and leave 'em on!.....except when you go to sleep. And adjust your scope with your glasses on. That way anybody with half decent vision will find the scope is focused for them as well. As for the fogging thing, the more you wear them, and clean them, the less they fog. And if you have the coin, go for the lightest, thinnest newest fan dangled poly carbonate type lense that your optometrist has on offer cos they fog very little.

I have worn glasses for ever. Contacts are better for sports and hunting but a pain in the arse to fit and remove. I find the trick with hunting with glasses is try and keep cool. Take layers of before you start climbing the hill.Stop before you get to the top and take a minute to cool down before looking into the next gully. Carry a cleaning cloth or chamois cloth in a CLEAN pocket, if you do fog up a quick wipe will usually buy you enough time to make a shot.

My glasses are a bane for hunting in wet warm weather. Tried contacts once but quickly found out that it is much more difficult to put those on and off in a tent with dirty fingers compared to glasses. Keeping cool and using a bit of antifog gel for diving goggles helps a bit, but it is hard to keep cool when scaling steep hills. Always keep a little bit of cloth for glasses in my bum bag.

Eyes started going down hill after my brain injury in 2014.
Lost a lot of close range focus and both eyes focus different. Once out a bit it's ok
But definitely cant read as well if the lights a bit low.
Hanging off as long as I can before i get them

I wear contacts when doing anything outdoors, especially hunting/shooting.
They are a pain in the arse and I hate them, the only thing I hate more than contact lenses is glasses.

I used to try get by with only wearing glasses/contacts when I absolutely had to but wear them full time now, being able to see properly 1000% of the time is worth the faff of contacts lenses.

modern ones are light years ahead of my first pair. Now I wear disposibles. Can put them in on the fly no mirror or other stuff required. Always have a couple of spares in my kit.
Only hassle now is I need bloody glasses to see up close FFS!!!!

What brand of disposables do you use? I might give them another go. last time I tried, eyes got sore and watery halfway through the day hunt and they were difficult to put in and take out.

I have cheap pair of specs..possibly $2 shop jobbies plus3 they state,lenses are about size of top joint of little finger,they slide into tiny oval cylinder about 8" long and sit nicely in a pocket without getting damaged...great for using the gps/map and now even for plurry TXTing...I do miss phone with huge font.... pretty much carry this pair everywhere now,logbook at work I can still do without glasses JUST,its much neater when wear them.

Practise makes perfect with them.
I use Focus Night and Day or Dalies Aqua Comfort currently If I cant get them then accuvue oasis. Daily disposables are not cheap but if you only use them occasionally and have same prescription in both eyes then not too bad.
If you know your script you can buy online

Never leave them in more than 24 hours MAX. 10 + years ago I originally used FOCUS Montly. Left them in 30days and then remove and replace as directed by optician. I got a corneal ulcer

I am much the same ,worn contacts for 40 years and also need glasses for up close . It is a hassle putting them in and taking them out while camping in a tent but after 40 you get used to it!! just need to be organized .

I use disposable contacts for hunting as I hate wearing glasses hunting due to sweat drips and fogging. It may look a bit naff but if you have to wear glasses then wearing a sweatband helped me a lot, I use one of these https://www.hyperride.co.nz/product/...am-pullover-ea

The rubber rand makes a huge difference directing any sweat to the side of your face.

Wearing a hat seems to make fogging worse as well, especially wide brim hats, a cap might be slightly better.

I was using Acuvue moist but then the optometrist suggested I try Acuvue Oasys as they will be more comfortable. More expensive but definitely better to wear so I'd recommend spending a bit extra for better quality. I'm only wearing them on weekends usually and sometimes not even then so the extra cost in the scheme of things is not a big deal.

The best solution of all would be to get laser eye surgery if you can afford it.

I have the same issue. Anti fog for motorcycle helmets or dive goggles will help, but as a previous poster put, its your temperature that causes the steam. I have improvement (but not 100% solved) using antiperspirant on my forehead and cheeks - but I need to be able to sweat so it dont put it anywhere else. I remove clothing early, or simply put less on to start with, and I carry a few cloths so I can wipe glasses and face to remove moisture when I need to. It is still an issue and it fogging cost me the fallow buck of a lifetime a few years ago.

I wear contacts full-time cause I spent to long looking at screens/books studying at uni and it made me short sited.

At first I found the contacts a huge pain and actually wore glasses more often. After about 6 months I'd got enough practice taking them in and out and now find them much better than glasses.

I'd recommend getting a couple of sets of monthly ones and use them as much as you can in day to day life, like anything practice makes perfect. Then take daylies hunting and you don't have to worry about cleaning them.

Acuvue moist were ones i tried and I hated them.
Also plan on getting laser eye surgery whenever I can go back to Malaysia for a holiday to visit family, it is relatively affordable there. Also spending a thousand dollars every time I need to update my glasses because of my terrible eyesight just hurts. Need to pay extra for thinner lenses because if I go the cheap option the lenses will be thick as and heavy as bricks.

got the good wifey to buy me three pairs of the wee glasses in tube container today..a whole $5 per pair......one for my day bag,one for the pack and a spare pair,might go in chainsaw bag for sharpening on fly.....its a bastard getting old.

What would it cost in NZ$ getting Laser in Malaysia? Last time I looked locally a couple of years ago it was going to be over $6000

Check out just what is wrong with your eyes.
Has it changed - is it actually "failing" ? Did you used to be able to see better ?

Sounds like you're short sighted if things are actually sharp up close and your glasses make them sharp in the distance. That won't change unless you wear contacts or have laser surgery. Laser can fix astigmatism too (that's being more short sighted in one direction than the other. Shows up that a pinpoint light like a star is smeared out to a wide band rather than a round blob.)

Two things that do change as you get older are:
Ability to focus up close. You can still see fine further away. A lot of people here have described that. Needing reading glasses to see close for the phone or chainsaw sharpening.
Cataracts. These generally make everything blurry with less contrast. Sometimes its worse in dim light but more often worse in bright light, depending whether the cataract is in the centre of the lens or the edges. Surgery fixes it pretty good, if you can get it.
Other problems inside the eye that are much harder to deal with.

If you haven't done it recently, it would be worth seeing an optometrist.

Otherwise, using naked eyes through a side focus or adjustable objective scope, keeping glasses warm in a pocket and frequent cleaning with as dry chamois cloth or something can reduce problems a bit.

To my knowledge it is about 1800 NZD per eye in Malaysia, could be lower or higher depending on where it is done or how bad the eye is. The clinic in the Subang Jaya area (where I return to usually) have their low end price at 600 NZD per eye, but I think with how bad my eyes are it might be in the 1000+ range.

I usually get my glasses and teeth done in Malaysia every two years or so before this whole covid mess, might as well when i visit for chinese new year family stuff.

Anyhow buying lenses on line forced a visit to OPSM optometrist every two years. Was having trouble focusing my new Zeiss and seeing two sets of cross hairs sometimes made grouping a real challenge… thought the scope might be a lemon.
They picked up a cloudiness in lenses in my eyes plus pressure issues. Off to a specialist confirmed Cataracts and glaucoma ☹️
Good news was nothing wrong with the scope and thankfully medical insurance covered me for surgery that cost $12k+
Surgeon suctioned out my lenses put new ones in and after two lots of surgery I now have vision that I don’t remember ever having before 15/20 in one 16/20 the other bottom line of chart no trouble!

Glaucoma well it can make u go blind, nightly eye drops and 6 monthly check ups keeping that in check. Getting old a pain - bits of u start to fail.

If you are having a problem with glasses fogging up there is a simple solution . And that is you are placing the glass to close to your face and hence there is no chance of airflow between yourself and the glasses . So all that is needed is to have them a little bit further out from your face .

I have the same issue using binoculars never through my glasses the only ones I have found to have enough adjustment in the focus range for me a Minox they are centered when focused so plenty of movement to go.

I wear contact lenses and had a bit of trouble at the start but optometrist said start off slow at couple of hours a day and gradually increase the time you wear them over a couple of weeks.Now wear dailies all the time and have no trouble unless you have bug spray on your fingers or have cut up a chilli recently….

Thought I would add to this thread instead of starting a new one. No real answers for me here or on others but hopefully more feedback.
Have had the need for +1.25 readers for a few years now, with excellent long range vision but noticed that I was struggling to define paper targets yesterday and the double reticle was causing me a bit of grief. I can normally discount the imaginary one and when hunting, doesn’t bother me at all. The concern now is that I’ve taken up reloading and this will involve a great deal more range time.
Obviously there has been some degradation in my right eye and will be heading to an optometrist next time I’m in the big smoke.
One question I have though, can these mild issues be resolved with better optics?? I’ve notoriously never spent more than $400-450 on scopes so I may have to get the gorse out of my pockets and upgrade. Any examples where this has resolved the issue for anyone?
