    Fussy Winchester .06

I have recently acquired a Winchester 1906 repeater and have found it to be really fussy with ammo. I'm hoping someone can help me narrow down it's preference before buying heaps of different ammo at random.
The problem is all but one ammo I have tried jams up on the spring and won't close.
I have tried elly subs, cci subs, fiocchi rapid fire, and a random Winchester super x I think. The ammo it did like was aguila high velocity hollow points.
The only visual difference I can see is that the aguila is copper plated projectiles.
What I'm really wanting is to find a subsonic ammo that will load a full mag without jamming on closing!

Check it's for long rifle..not std. If it's std some of the target stuff may see you right is my only suggestion.
    75/15/10 black powder matters

Yep it's printed on the barrel "22 short-long or long rifle"
This is considerably older than anything else I've owned...
I'm sure I'll figure it out

Are you referring to one of these?. Do you mean the spring in the magazine tube is jamming up?

I would recommend only using standard velocity ammo - the long rifle ammo of the day was pretty luke-warm compared to today so the mechanism wasnt designed to handle modern pressures.
Have you checked that the rifling is not leaded up? This can be a problem in older rifles but is readily overcome with some bore cleaner and elbow grease

Yep, same as pictured. The spring tube is getting caught and won't slide over the rounds. If you keep trying you can see scars on the lead from where it's getting caught up

First thing I did was clean it extremely well. Very clean and shiny bore!! Really good condition.
Good to know about standard velocity, but that's my issue here. Any lower or subsonic ammo is not loading right.
    The high velocity went good.

Because its a mechanical action and not a blowback action it shouldnt matter what ammo you use for it to feed.

How has the mag inner tube been reduced to ten or less rounds ? If it has had a ring rolled in it that may well be binding the inner spring.

Have you tried dismantling the spring tube. Thats where I would start. There is a pin at the end with the knurling that you have to drift out. That will release the spring and follower. The guns bloody old and probably never had the tube cleaned. Clean all the wax an crap out and check for any damage to tube and follower.

    Cheers for the advice,
The spring tube goes in absolutely fine with the copper tipped aguila which made me think it would be ok... And with other ammo it goes down fine with 4 or so rounds but any more and it gets caught up on the rounds.

And Fee Knicks: it's not a feeding issue. Rifle feeds and cycles perfectly and never missed a beat... It's a loading the magazine issue.

Check the end of the mag tube, where the follower protrudes. The ends can get a bit beat up over the years. Should have a slight chamfer there to help the tube slide over the rounds. Simply running an oiled patch up and down the tube against the follower will help too.

Possibly, someone has attempted to restrict the number of rounds the mag will take. If you gently tap this pin out you may find something inside that is obstructing the follower?

Cheers, that's helpful. Will give it a go.
Can I pull the pin out with pliers ?

It is a tight fit. If you gently tap with a hammer in the direction of the red arrow, it will poke out the opposite side. You should then be able to grab it with pliers an pull all the way out. Be aware the spring will be under a little tension so watch things don't go flying and disappear under a bench top!
