    head games

After recently having had a near miss /reloading mishap causing rifle to be destroyed,my mind has been battling with getting back on horse ,so to speak.....
I have had some re tweaked reloads sitting on bench for two weeks now, just waiting for me to "get around" to shooting them....had plenty of time, had plenty of oppertunities....just couldnt find motovation to do so.
tonight after a pep talk from a good mate (you know who you are) I finally went and poked some holes in paper....no issues at all, once first shot had been fired, all was good again in my mind.

years back I had bad spell with the dreaded "rhymes with grinch",HATED shooting paper,at all, rezeroing rifle was a chore.... my reloads were mild...very mild looking back.....then I fitted suppressors and got back into rhythem of things...rifles dont bite, dont kick, reloads got hotter again and have had 8 happy years, then recent hiccup bought all the old fears back in spades.
had to do same thing all over again....think it through,
    rifle will boot a little,
    it will make noise,
    all will be fine,
    suck it up buttercup,
    concentrate on sight picture,
    super steady,
    squeaze off the shot....
    breath again
hope my rambling helps someone else.

Thanks for that, I too had a "grinch" problem about 30 years ago - I was shooting a 7x57 at the time so I don't know how it came about but it was a very frustrating period. Eventually it just went away and now I'm good even with snorty short barrel jobbies (being bloody careful to wear good earmuffs for any range shooting).

You are dead right that its a "head game" but its hard to see the wood for the trees at the time . . . .

I'm a shocking flincher. The best thing I have found is spending some time visualizing shooting, I try to see the sight picture, squeezing the trigger and calmly following through despite big recoil/sound. If I do that enough I can do it on the day.

Near misses make you learn, you never forget a near miss, if you do, it wasnt near enough.

He he I've been known to put the first round of a new batch into the ground just sort of resting the rifle out in front of me at arms length.
After that I'm fine. Touch wood i have never had a serious problem.

I probably shouldn't be reading this thread....

First time reloader, starting with 338 lap mag , and zero prior experience I'm a little worried shit might go south on me ( "shit" being the bolt or receiver parts going south into my face ) when I pull trigger for the first time....
The brass is all ready to go and primed but can't quite bring myself to load it up yet .....
    Pussy, I know.....

Anyone know of a full suit of medieval armour for sale ?

    Good comment @Micky Duck
When are you buying a replacement 270 ?
Or are you upgrading to a EBRG ?

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

nope.....check n double check data...pick a low load/start load... weight your charge.... make your round...then go and shoot it...to be sure wear ear protection and glasses, but it WILL BE FINE if you have done your bits right...... its a head game, you need to trust load and back yourself.
after seeing what hornady superpreformance 150grn loads did in mates brand new sako last Christmas,I am just as weary of factory loads...them suckers were hotter than a hot thing and blew a primer and flattened others so were terribly inconsistant...... one of you chronicgraph users might have fun running them through for ES....

I was like this a few weeks ago, started with the minimum powder recommendation and was very nervous firing off those first rounds. Still get a bit nervous but starting to find my feet after asking lots of questions on here.

This opens a wider topic than just shooting 'How to deal with the mental consequences of traumatic situations' Having a gun blow up would make me forget hunting and go fishing, so good on you for keeping at it.
A bad / cheating relationship can put us off rooting for a while, a car crash can make us windy about driving. I dont know the answer to your situation MD (or the others) as it is a symptom of a bigger issue FEAR. How to overcome the fear of the same happening again. I do know time heals and all that but it would be nice to have some tools and methods to speed the process
