Hi guys
Is anyone using this ammo out of an 18" 308? Interested in results....more specifically MV, has anyone chrono'd this?
Hi guys
Is anyone using this ammo out of an 18" 308? Interested in results....more specifically MV, has anyone chrono'd this?
Have you tried any of the new Sako 165gr ammunition in that rifle?
Nope, only Hornady 150g SST
I've just starting using sf 168gr eldm and get 2670fps out of a 18"
ok I will bite..its a slow day.......why does velocity matter??? you have 18" barreled rifle so asumably you bought it for bush hunting...or wouldve gone 20-21" so you want load that groups well and doesnt drop too much out to 200-250yards...well thats easy...grab box off shelf and go forth and hunt....
Ive seen 2 boxs of hornady 150grn sst loads used...superpreformance branded and they were HOT....and inconsistant...eg 4 out of 40 flattened primers wickedly, one popped primer out completely...brand new sako rifle before you ask....
if you targeting deer and or pigs and majority of shots will be sub hundred yards, buy box of winchester 180grn powerpoints and be happy hunter who brings home the goods.buy box of 150grn factory and see how it patterns, use this for the occasional longer shot...or get fancypants and buy 165 or suchlike....pattern it.zero rifle for it...with luck the 180s will be near enough to not matter for sub hundy and go forth and hunt. far too much is put into velocity numbers....it doesnt matter much up close..if you dont own rangefinder and arent twiddlin n fiddlin with dials it matters not at all.
Thanks for the reply...no, it's not for bush hunting- my 16" 308 takes care of that...the reason I ask, is that I need to determine MV out of my 18" barrel with that load in order for Leupold to get my CDS made up. The box states 2600, but I'm assuming that is out of a 24" barrel. Unfortunately I don't own a chrono to verify my MV. Cheers
ok makes perfect sence now...your dial will take care of twiddlin n fiddlin for you....might be best to beg borrow or hire a cronicgraph and try your load .as you well know two rifles identicle barrel length.make model and shooter can be 100fps different...someone elses verified speed could be as far out as your best guess.
Sorry cant comment on 308 but i have been using Precision Hunter out of my 21" 7mm wsm, box rated at 3000fps, chroneyed @ 2990fps, was pretty surprised it was that close to be honest.
Yep, i'll definitely need to chrono that load somehow, somewhere- to be fair I still need to confirm that's the ammo I want to stick with and get the dial made for too.
Grasshoppa- that's a great result given the shorter barrel length...one would assume Hornady test barrel to be 24" or even 26"??
If you have no chrono use the bullet drop method to determine your velocity. The bullet drop charts have inches drop and Moa so you can set up targets at say 300 and 500 yards , fire a group at each and see how far they drop , the inches drop should give you a pretty good idea on the bullet speed. You can do your drop chart using the info on the bullet pack to start and see how it fits in with actual drop and then adjust the numbers till you get as close a fit what's happening in real life.
Chronos can be a bit out so the drop method is probably more accurate , just a bit of mucking around.
Cheers for that Mooseman...now I need to find a place where i can shoot out to 500 yards...

Not too far from you?
I'm in the same boat as yourself. Might have to try and sort out a trip down there some weekend soon to get some drop figures before I set up a turret on my rifle.
