Hard to argue with their choices.
So a WW1 list?
My votes go for
Lee enfield
Bergmann
Luger artillery
Pederson device
Definitly not the Ross
Thanks for posting that. Some great slow motion footage of the guns working.
It wouldn't be my top five but very good.
My WW2 list:
Nosin Nagant
MP 40
Lee Enfeild
PPSH - 41
BAR
Oh and the 6th wild card.
Thompson sub machine gun
What about the Bren?
got them all hanging on the gunroom wall, but i dont agree with them. They need a sten at the minimum to add balance
The 1911A1 belt hanger.. I'm not sure about its place, though it is very much a matter of taste. At least it has a single stack magazine.
The Americans did the stats and found their pistols accounted for relatively few enemy combatant kills. So they developed the M1, then the M2 and also the M1/2 Carbine. The .30 carbine was half the cost of a M1 Garand, and a fifth the cost a Thompson, lighter weight, with lighter ammo than either and provided better penetration than either the .45ACP or the 9mm Luger. Although intended for rearguard troops, like the M16 it just could not be kept out of the hands of front line troops! In the end it became the most produced WW2 rifle by the USA and if not for the late introduction of selective fire it would have been the first intermediate calibre assault rifle.
Note he half calls the soviet SMG their assault rifle, but the .30 carbine had twice the muzzle energy of the 7.62 Tokarev. Diminutive, but lot lacking.
But, Gott sei dank! No free standing grip. The war would have ended in '44 if that had been the case.
