    Leith Valley Rifle Range

Does anyone in/around Dunedin have experience of using the Leith Valley Rifle Range?

I got a new (my first) rifle at the end of last week and need to learn how to sight it in. I emailed the range asking if someone would be able to help but haven't had a response as yet. Do you think someone at the range would help or am I wasting my time? If I am wasting my time, any suggestions about how to approach using the rifle for the first time..? Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice.

    Cheers

    Matt

Generally pretty good blokes up there, and they now seem to run it with a couple of range officers on at once. Let them know you are new, when you pay and do the safety discussion, and they'll likely give you some pointers. It opens at 1pm from memory, best get there nice and early, so you can go over your needs with them. Will all depend on who is on duty and how busy the range is.

Good choice , can't go wrong with a 308 , when you sort out a place to sight it in take at least a couple of different bullet weights that tickle your fancy incase your gun dosnt like a particular brand so guns are like that , so have you figured out how to mount your scope ?

I got the guys at H&F to mount the scope so that's all good to go. Thanks for the advice re the bullets. I got Federal Fusion .308 150 grain. I don't know anything about them - I just figured I needed to start somewhere and they seemed to be a middle of the road product price-wise. Any advice on a different bullet I should give a go? Cheers

Pretty good ammo, and a good projectile for large animals like red stags.

The federal "Blue Box" is cheaper again and is also pretty good. In fact very good for goats and good on deer too, and will not break the bank

In general, I have found federal to be one of the more accurate factory loads despite the price at the lower end.

A ballistics chart can be helpful when trying to decide http://www.hornady.com/assets/files/...Ballistics.pdf
You can see the 150,sst look pretty good along with a bunch of others !

As you said, you don't just need to sight the rifle in, you need to learn to do it. Ask the ROs about the HUNT course the Deerstalkers offer. Will teach you what you need to know.

But it's like that for 50k in every direction, so we don't mind.

Yeah it's about the only option short of driving 40min to the BRC (drive for 40 min to the BRC, it's worth it)

What's the advantage of going to BRC, other than potentially not being in a damp muddy shit-hole..!?
