I took Lucy my 5 year old daughter for a quick range session yesterday.
Just a bit of a fun lesson in firearms handling and safety, and shoot a few water balloons to keep it fun.
Last time I tried it was a bit early, she wasn't ready, too young and too little to handle the little marlin youth rifle.
Much better this time, and she quite enjoyed it.

Great stuff. Doing the same with my daughter, she loves it to. Great times.
And more important, a great grounding in firearms safety and use. (Plus the father child bonding etc... :) )
Awesome Clint!!! Cant wait to get my girls into it, still a year or two off yet but my eldest (nearly 4) loves the thought of coming hunting with dad. Makes for interesting reading of the 'Bambi' book :D
Yes, we have had some interesting conversations over the bambi book too, I believe she's also made some hard case comments when she was at Kindy too. It's amazing what they take in and repeat later. ;)Quote:

They used to like going out for a walk with Dad, but never really followed a shooting interest.
Neither are that interested in guns, but know (even now), when a firearm is being used in a dangerous manner, or is in a potentially lethal condition - unsafe, possibly loaded, etc.
Very happy that they still remember my lessons after 30+ years.

@Beaker, yeah lucy called time pretty quick too.
I think it is actually very mentally taxing on them at that age.

I like it when I see the baton of enthusiasm for firearms being passed on to young people. Go Lucy.
If we don't encourage youth and others into our sports then we stand to lose to the anti brigade.

I am so "gutted", i had my first visit to the pistol club here in invercargill and my 7yo son tag along, we had an awesome time and also spoiled with my son shooting the RO .22 AR"15" then his wife convinced him to have a go with the pistol, little "bugger" did very well and was so funny to watch him firing the first round in the pistol, he close the eye(the way i see) and pull the trigger, hahaha… little "shit" even then he hit the 6X4" target at 20yards. After that i got my 10/22 and he fire over 100 pounds on the little targets as well…
I had a turn on a S&W MP 9mm and i didn't disappoint "myself" been the second time shooting a pistol(i fire revolvers before).
The why i am "gutted" is because i left my telephone at home and didn't take any photo or video of the experience.

While they are safe with firearms we are only now going over the arms code so that the older one can get his junior proficiency badge. Seems silly that he can shoot while younger but can't do some of the safety stuff until he is older.
He likes IPSC and we have done a little bit by ourselves but the real impediment seems to be the lack of other young shooters. It is a long and boring day for a young one to stand around with a bunch of adults and no other people their age.
Until there are a few more people his age I don't see him wanting to do it as so much of the time is social chatting, he is left in the dark there.
