Thread: model 7 as platform for long range ?

so, what do people think of the rem model seven as a base platform for as long range setup ? Long range being maybe 600 mts . What are the triggers like like ? Can improvements be made to accurise the setup to shoot better than 0.5 inch ?

Id say not ideal with a standard barrel on them, some a very small profile (pencil barrel) and most have a short throat. In saying that a lot of guys have made LR rigs work, namely 7SAUMs (guessing reamed throat or new barrel)
You can get after market parts easy enough but if it was me I would choose another action for LR

As best I know these were a compact rifle and suited to scrub guns and the like.
Probably easy enough to sell to those in the market for one.
I think Remington 600Mohawk was used a bit in target rifle builds.
A lot of people build on Remington 700 actions and their clones.
Not to say it can't be accurate to 600 but for multiple shots you want a heavier barrel etc.
If you want a compact 600m rifle consider a Tikka CTR. Compact Tactical Rifle , theycome with a medium weight barrel standard.

everything on the model 7 can be replaced or upgraded to get what you are thinking of
from aftermarket triggers to match grade barrels
trueing the action to carbonfiber stocks and aftermarket bottom metal

just have a look at what its going to cost you before you set out as its a deep hole to dive in to financially

I have a Model 7 in 260Rem and it shoots very well. I did replace the trigger and stiffen the stock with epoxy, removed the presure bedding at the front of the barrel channel. I also imported a couple for fiberglass stocks a number of years back. It was a dream to shoot.

Used it for long range matched and hunting to 600m. It does get much use these days as the barrel is shot. Will spin something on it at somepoint soon, maybe a 22-250 or something like that.

When you say long range rig, for what purpose?

If long range hunting was the purpose, particually a mountain type rifle suitable for making LR shots then yes i think a model 7 is suitable.

I run a M7 in 7mm Saum, it runs the factory 22" barrel (the short mag M7s had a heavier profile barrel). Ive done a few mods to the rifle, mainly to reduce weight.

My bare rifle weighs under 5.5 lbs. With a big 4-20x50 target turret scope its only 3.1kg so nice and light to carry up the high country.

Its got a carbon fibre Stug stock, fluted barrel, fluted bolt, skeletonised bolt handle etc. I had the factory trigger lightened up but aftermarket triggers are available.

It can shoot well under .5 moa. I run 162 Amax handloads at 3,050 fps for my LR load, i have the bullets seated out long, i single feed them as they wont fit in the short magazine of the M7. I do also run 150 sgks at mag fit for walking in or if i happened to be stalking etc.

A stiff load in a light rifle does induce a good recoil but a decent suppressor or brake soon sorts that out. I carry a DPT magnum suppressor with 2 extra baffles on it in my pack and fit that prior to making a long shot prone. It turns it into a pussy.

I dont shoot many deer these days under 500 yards, 600 is quite normal, longest deer with this M7 7mm SAUM so far is 994 yards.

A few years ago i built a full custom in 28 Nosler with a heavier 26 inch barrel running 195gr bullets at 3100 fps but for most my hunting i find i take the M7 7mm SAUM as its just easier to carry, more portable and more multi purpose and still just as capable to kill deer at the more normal LR distances ie around 600 yards.

My wee model 7 has been bedded, Trigger tuned up and I've shortened it to 16"

However if I wanted something a bit more LR I would leave the barrel at the standard 20".

My 7mm08 with handloads is about 0.3 moa

Pretty sure I have seen this guy shoot a lot further than 600m with his Mod Seven and do well...

As a M7 owner, my specs are as follows:

16" factory barrel, 7mm08

McMillan KS stock (uncommon, lucky as it came on rifle, great handling for a short rifle/carbine, palm swell more like that of a shotgun)

TriggerTech Special M7 trigger (highly recommended!)

PTG firing pin assembly

DPT mod (regular, no stainless baffles)

EGW 20 MOA M7 scope base (pain to source as mine is the single hole rear bridge)

Leupold MK4 3.5-10x40





Personally don't think I'll be shooting very far with this setup, it's meant as a handy bush/forestry rifle which is compact, easy to carry and shoot offhand or out of the pickup window.

Nice to have the ability to dial out a bit with the Leupold but not expecting miracles with this setup.

It's very nice to shoot especially with the TT trigger, might look into something like the Bartlien 2B contour when I wear out the factory barrel but that should take a while.

Trouble with the M7 is that it's a 'cult' rifle. When you try and order parts from some suppliers, the clueless people they hire often think you mean 'Remington Model 700'... and that's when you have to refrain from SPEAKING... VERY... SLOWLY... to them and just order the parts yourself, which takes time and money (plus shipping and import tax! )

To me, it's really important that a rifle feeds from the magazine (handily, this one takes 5+1) . I'm not going to try and load long and heavy pills in this rifle as I have a 7mmRM for that.

I built up a Model 7 in 6.5 Creedmoor and could easily use that for long range with the right scope set up to dial. Factory mag length is spot on for this round too, which is one of the reasons for choosing it. I did fit a Timney trigger for a better feel, as the factory one on mine was not the best for what I wanted.

That's my 7mm08.

Seated to 2.780 and feeds from the mag nicely.

Not an ideal choice - personally i love them - iv got 2.
But have i built LR hunting/steel guns on them - never because there just isnt enough aftermarket support for them - stock and magazines especially.
Not saying dont do it, but lots of heartache trying to find suppliers of the few bits that are available.

@gimp has a very nice one in .223

I used a m7 as it was shorter than most actions so felt like a better fit for a .223 while still being able to fit decent AICS mags. I'd use a 700 clone custom action if building a rifle for a larger cartridge as mounting options and other parts for the m7 are limited in comparison and some of the lightweight 700 clone customs are just as light as a m7.

I haven't used one as a factory rifle really but it would be the same comparison to a 700 really, shorter and lighter, shoot fine, a bit harder to find mounts for bigger scopes

Theres no need to get too sophisticated with rings for the M7. I simply run 30mm Talley rings (the standard one where the base is integral with the lower part of the ring, i run a 4-20x50 Sightron which is fairly big, I'm pretty sure my Talleys are 'lows' and the scope sits nice and low with clearance on the objective.

With my scope i can dial out to 1,000 yards no problem, no need for 20 moa rails etc. I think my scope has 80 moa of elevation travel, so it'll be zeroed somewhere close to the middle of that, that still has close to 40 moa of up adjustment. I need 22 moa for 1,000 yards.

Talleys are light and simple and run the scope lower that using a rail and rings.
