HOPE THIS IS CORRECT SPOT>

hi everyone. bit of an update and a thankyou. the good news is the land deal has finally gone through so i now have somewhere to shoot my pcp air rifles and my shotty. but also thanks to a few people on here i now have a 2nd hand bergera 308 short barrel and a new dpt suppressor*and even a couple of extra baffles to put on it from another member. I stuck the biggest*long range scope I had and bought 2 packs of budget ammo to start n a pack of subsonic*just to test. oh and thanks to another member for the 2 gongs. so roll on xmas n i can finally make all of this happen. will give you all an update after about how it all goes. very excited, cheers :)

UPDATE. forgot to send the last message ;-0*so i gave her a shot over xmas. louder than i expected even with the dpt and 2 extra baffles. i have ordered some proper earmuffs*as the mower ones are too big. was hitting the gun cheek.* i need a better shooting bench so im getting that sorted. but i did manage to hit the smaller 20cm gong at about 110m. the 180m 30cm gong i was just missing so i have some corflute im taking down next time so i can see the hits n dial it in better. it was windy n my bench wasnt good tho is my excuse. i will add a pic of the board i used to help to get it sighted in initially from about 40m away. i then shot the 50 cal airgun round ball from about 20m to show you what that can do, just for fun.*

yeah they really helped me out n i was a new member but that didnt stop them :)

you SHOULD be able to sight in without firing a shot...well good enough to get you on the paper anyway...dead easy with break open like that....open action and place in something form enough that it wont move and line up something through bore...them move Xhairs accordingly.... the smaller the object you can centre through bore the better.... something 25-50 yards away is ideal.cheap foam earplugs may be better than muffs and if worn inside muffs will really up the protection.

Or another possible way is to take a single shot at a bullseye and holding the rifle on the bullseye best you can then move cross hairs to impact point. Easier with someone else helping and turning the dials , but even better if rifle is locked in place somehow . Remember if sighting in at 50 it takes 2 clicks to move the cross hair the amount stated on the turret eg 1/4 moa at 100 for 1 click is 2 clicks at 50 , so if you inch out at 50 it will take 8 clicks to shift the inch across

This. Two extra tricks.
- Put an unprimed case in the breech and bore sight through this.
- The target boresighted for is best round and just short of filling the "muzzle ring". Think soccer ball to ensure it's far enough out not to matter with the difference in bore/sight axis. A tennis ball fills the muzzle ring at about 10m in a .30 cal so is too close.

i did that with my 416. Bore sighting with a barrel that size is problematic. slight shift in head changes it quite a bit. almost like paralax.
Had a case with a split neck (initial loads made from 375h+h cases) so popped the primer out of that one

I have been known to take boresighter/colimeter with me..fire 3 shot group..hopefully into neat wee triangle...then with rifle unloaded use colimeter to adjust the Xhairs in correct direction...if youve never seen/used one...its a thing a bit smaller than coffee cup that has insert that slides down end of ya barrel.when you look through scope into it,you can see a grid with darker horizontal and verticle line through centre....grid squares are close to 1"/25mm at hundred yards...so if you had shots hit say 6" left and 3" low...you just look through scope and move Xhairs corrispondingly...this is similar to what FTX does but negates the holding steady on target bit......most folks just measure,either by eye (guilty your honour) by grids on target or ruler...and adjust accordingly.

I boresight at home aiming at an insulator on a power pole about 60 metres away. Sometimes I use the top of a stranger post around 30 metres away.
If I don't have time to get it done at home I do it at the 100yd range sighting dead centre of my target. I then usual crank up say 1 to 2 minutes and fire a shot.

I never fail to get on an A4 sized sheet, sometimes very near my aiming mark. To be safe though I use an aiming mark in the centre of my target.

From there I re-aim at the aiming mark and holding the rifle real steady adjust the crosshair to the bullet hole (centre of group if more than 1 shot fired). Few more shots to fine tune if necessary and done.

Almost had a major woops using a laser boresighter. Fundamentally the laser boresighters are useless however I used to use one to align my old optical chronograph. Worked a treat. On the day in question I ended up distracted by another shooter. Finished aligning chronograph, finishing nattering, got bolt and ammo out of bay, inserted bolt, holy shit the laser boresighter was still attached.

Changed my procedure from that point on - whenever the boresighter was taken out of its wee plastic box, my bolt was immediately placed on top of the box. So near....

depending on where you are or if you want to travel i have a colometer for initial sighting in it gets it pretty close as well but you still need to/should do a final target check

I still reckon those colimators are more for confirming a zero. IE you zero the rifle using lead, fit the colimator and take a note of where the crosshairs are. Then if you think you bump the scope or possibly have to change it, you could use the noted reference to check/rezero it
Only ever used one once like a bore sighter so moot point. An opinion only

Ive got two of them...they dont agree on where zero should be....and if mounts are crooked they will be well off,eg 22-250 is 6"left and 2" high according to bore sighter...got me on the paper all the same.

If you’re trying to use that wicker basket and shooting from that height that will be half your problem. Too wobbly. Shoot prone over a solid rest like a big sandbag or heavy daypack.

Second, not many people will be able to go straight to hitting a target at 180m with a new rifle first day they use it. Needs a bit of “paper work” not just gongs.

But you dont have too many problems. Thats good going for a first sight in session.
I start at 10m for first shot when setting up a new rifle. I dont use a collimator.

Another thing to take into consideration is what brand of ammo your using. Different brands go differently in different rifles. There can be quite a substantial POI change. Ask the guy you got it from what type of factory ammo it runs best with. This will save you from having to get heaps of different packets of ammo to experiment with.

thanks mate, yeah it was all a bit rushed n excited for the first time i could use it but was fun. im making a bench n the old man wants to make a mound to lay prone. iv got a couple of sand bags n the corflute will help for sighting as well. looking forward to the next outing :)

thanks mate, yeah iv got his info on that. i hope to make my own one day. in the mean time i will try a few dif boxes n see if any look good. i did have a good read on a forum on loading thats convinced me its the way to go. one day :)

yeah mate cheers she is def fun. once im set up better it will be even better. was a rushed shot that i did. as for ammo, was just the cheapest guncity had. Fiocchi PerFecta: 147 Grain. just to get me started n sighted in. but yeah seems loadings the best way if i want accuarcy but these will do for now. one im setup better i will work out which ammo suit her best in the mean time at least :)
