New shooter - Ranges in ChCh

    Hello,

I've recently moved over to Christchurch from Australia and already have my firearms license and a couple of (unfired) firearms, but apart from the Hand-loaders Association Tuesday public nights, I have no idea if there are any ranges open to the public over weekends to zero in my rifles.

I know using DOC land for this purpose is silly, so I won't be considering doing that.

Looking forward to start hunting in this country and any advice would be very appreciated

Welcome to the forum, and the city, @Chazzwazzer. Best way to get onto the ranges other than the public open nights is as a guest of a member. I'm a member and need to sight in a number of rifles so you can hit me up.

The NZ deerstalkers located next door also hold public range days every second saturday of the month; info here Events

I go myself every so often. I would recommend turning up 10am sharp if you are planning on sighting in multiple rifles as it can get a bit busy around midday.

    Cheers,
    Alex

Put a few posts up, think you normally need about 5 before you can PM.

If you want to shoot out to longer ranges sparrow hawk has a range 2 hours south of chch open on 2nd weekend of every month. Check theirs website for details.

Yep. Bargain. Name another certified range you can take any gun incl a 50 cal and bash on plates to 2km. That has an ro and you don’t have to contend with 40 people all shooting the same targets at once. You can get a lot of training and dope work done on a few rifles for the day. The wind can get pretty awesome for training out there too. Range cost $10000 to set up. It’s not a charity.

Appreciate the heads up on Malvern being seasonal. It's good to know how each club operates - a club that's open every day during daylight hours and doesn't need a dedicated RO is ideal, since I never seem to be free on official club days. Plus it's a lot more relaxed when it's just a couple people and you can call cease fires easily to change targets and not worry about hogging a lane for someone else waiting to shoot.

@blair993 So far was mainly for sighting in and hunting but I've always
had a hankering to get into long range accuracy and if I'm good enough get into a bit of competition work.
