Parenting done right

Little miss 12yr old is getting keen to shoot her first deer so I have been trying to get in some range time with her using my suppressed howa mini as an introduction to centerfire.
She has shot the .22 plenty and also the 17hmr when I had it no worry at all but we all know that the substantial increase in noise of even a suppressed 223 takes a bit of getting used to.
Miss 12yr old has shot the 223 off the bench using a rest before but that is a lot different to shooting prone over a bipod in the field.
To help her get used to where to aim I printed some a3 targets of a deer with a red dot roughly where she should be aiming.
The deer outline is about the size of an a4 sheet.
We had a talk about safety and how a rifle is only dangerous when there is a bullet chambered and a finger on the trigger, we also talked about the fact we dont chamber a round till we are ready to shoot and the finger doesn't go anywhere near the trigger until she is steady and ready to take the shot.
After her first few shots I gave her some more advice about gently squeezing the trigger rather than "pulling it" she the got it and it was like flicking a switch.
She shot the below group (yellow x's) after watching me shoot the group marked with white x's at 100y then followed that up with smoking the 6"gong at 230y.
Bloody kid is a natural after very little instruction, she did however pay me the ultimate compliment telling me I make it look easy and it's a lot harder than it looks.....made my day.
Will try keep up the range sessions once a week and hopefully get her out for a fallow inside 100y before years out once she is confident and 100% consistent.

Great Dadding Danny and very good shooting from the young lady. It's always a good time teaching your kids how to shoot.

Cool, good time to be teaching her, nice shooting on the target both of you. She should be on course to put venison on the table before Xmas, looking for ward to the story of getting the deer.

Girls are generally superb at taking on board instructions, for the same reason they'll read the manual before attempting BBQ assembly.

People claiming gender differences are social construct have lost their bearings.

let her have an old stock....or get the air rifle out so she can get/build good muscle memory.

223 will do the job especially if you stick to around the 100 yds, plenty of time for the 308 as her confidence builds.

Yup I know, shot my first deer with the same 55gn sp factory ammo at 200y a fat fallow doe it certainly didn't get back up

Great stuff my daughter shot her first and only deer with the .223, it had to be a lone deer cause that meant it had no friends.

Great stuff, i really enjoy getting my kids out to the range and teaching them about firearms safety and how to shoot. They are capable of far more than we think they are too.

My 8 year old is hitting a 3 inch bull at 400 yards with a downloaded 6.5 creed. So cool seeing them listen to and apply what we teach them and their smiles when they can see we are proud of them.

I think in a Christmas or two you might need to find a 243 to hide under the tree haha

Well done Danny, and well done to your daughter. I find kids and woman are so much fun to teach and take hunting/shooting. They listen, they take it all on board, they shoot well. And theres no bloody testosterone thing going on that is prevalent in teens nowadays. Keep it up, look forward to more pic's.

Wee update agter todays range session with little miss 12....
Decided today to only shoot steel no targets but this time let ber do everything load the rounds into the mag, load the mag into the rifle, put the bolt in, find the gong and get comfortable resting behind the rifle.
Well even though the 100y gong is only 4" she smoked it easily and after a little bit of struggling worked out cycling the bolt on her own.
At this point I laid down a challenge 10 hits on the 230y gong from 10 shots and I'd take her out for morning tea, same as the 100y gong I let her get set up and aquire the target 10" gong and she set about methodically sending lead down range and to my and her suprise she nailed it 10 outta 10 shots, inspection showed 10 fresh hits 8 all within 5" just above center and 2 low but still well within 8" she's a little trooper all right if only she was big enough to carry deers :D
Seeing as we were on a roll I asked her if she wanted to try the 308win to my surprise she accepted and smoked the 100y gong with it. She was a little uncomfortable shooting it off the bench but she's keen to try again next time prone off the bipod.
She just keeps suprising me with each range visit at how much she retains and improves over last visit :)

good stuff mate...now you listen up Dad..... young ladies DONT NEED to carry said deers,that what dear old Dads are for...and later on hulking young suiters....if they wont carry out her deer for her....yeah nah piss off hairy legs,will find a more suitable fella to share life with.
you get young lass to carry the day bag and the bang sticks..you get to carry big heavy,smelly bloody bits....and shoot fallow...MUCH lighter to carry .
if lass is 60 kgs soaking wet.....a smaller fallow or goat would be dead easy carry using carry belt method. you would be surprised how much young lasses can carry.my daughter put on my venison filled pack and walked around,her brother and uncle COMBINED couldnt lift it out of wagon....

great stuff danny. she is already taking on the marksmanship principles if she can consistently hit those gongs like that. after a bit more lead has gone down range you are going to have to get inventive in making it a bit more of a challenge.

Exactly what my daughter's like. Carries around the bulky overly heavy 357 along with a full tramping pack for a 8 k walk in and 3 night stay at the hut, shoots a goat right between the eyes, carries it back to hut herself,guts it,skins it and bones it out and then insists on carrying it all the way home along with all her other gear and heavy rifle. Not once was I allowed to help besides advice .
The skin she then tanned and is now residing on her bedroom floor .

Might put the smaller gong out at 230yards we have a 6" and a 4" that might be next, as it was 8 out of her last 10 shots would've easily hit the 6" gong. 230 yards is kinda maximum for the range we are using which is fine I don't want her shooting her first deer any further away than that. Might take her up to Lyndon when she's a bit more comfortable behind the 308 for some longer range fun but there's no rush for that at all.

Right now is the best time of the year to stalk close on Hares with a 22. Skills learnt Hare stalking are transferable to deer stalking and great fun in the process

yup after many many years of Mountain safety firearms girls and woman were the best to teach target work - and to see them take away their best target to show Dad or Hubby was a real pleasure. I taught all my kids from a young age -I managed to get a Remington pump .22 with a youth stock and they loved it especially when Dad let them have some rapid fire- made a mistake and bought a crossman CO2 air rifle 10 shot -soon got rid of that -inaccurate and expensive to shoot -got a BSA springer and never looked back -

hares with .223 is even more fun....come to think of it its a lot of fun with .270 too!!!!!! have eaten many a campoven feed of hare snotted with the mighty .270,if you hit them in front end you still get back wheels and most of the back straps for dinner.
