Thread: Reactive targets - keeping it fun for the kids

My 6 yr old daughter is getting pretty keen on her shooting with her 22lr youth rifle.

So to keep it fun for her I've just finished making some reactive/exploding targets.

I can get 50psi in them fairly easy, I've added a couple of spoons of flour to hopefully add good visual effect.

I'm going to give them a test tomorrow, and am quite looking forward to it

They take 150 psi

Many years ago as a tire fitter I found that the generic plastic coke bottle could stand 130psi(as much as we had) even when strips were ground on its sides to help failure.

Snuck in while I was typing.

On a pressure lead, in a wheelie bin. 150 was all we could give them. Tongs and then a heat gun to cause a rupture, was good fun

mate told try water balloons just with air. recons his kids enjoyed it more then just shooting paper

When I was a kid I used to half fill em with water and pressurise the rest with a bike pump. Id then shoot em with an air rifle in the yard, much to the town's annoyance. One day one went to 120psi but it was a cheapie brand and it let go as I pumped it up. Nearly lost my thumb, frag wounds to left hand, heaps of stitches. The valve lodged itself in the shed roof.

Luckily I lived 200m from the medical centre in town so I wrapped my left hand in a teatowel and walked down. The did a good job with my thumb and dosed me up on pain killers. From there I had to get to school for my chemistry exam which went ok until about 45 minutes to go and the local wore off well and truly. Mammoth effort to keep my shit together for that exam but got through it.

Had a phobia of compressed air cylinders for about 20 years after that...

Mate best one is a full camping gas canister. Just don't shoot it with the valve pointing towards you!
Another good one is a catering can size bake bean can. Leave the lid off and sit an empty one on top. Shoot the bottom one, the top one goes flying up in the ear.
