Rifle, 3GUN and Pistol Shooting

If one was in Auckland and wanting an introduction, education and training in 3GUN, Pistol and Safe Shooting practises in general...where would be the best place for one to go? I have seen the new Auckland range coming and pre-registered there, but wondering if there is anything in the meantime? I have emailed Waiuku Club...anywhere else? or any coaches around the Auckland area? Being new to all this I do also need general time and experience with my rifles but would like to work towards learning more and being involved in a new sport. (I currently have a 308 Tikka and an AR15) - Apologies if this has been covered before, I did do a quick search but thought id ask anyway. :thumbsup:

there's Warkworth (Warkworth Pistol Club) and, rumour has it, Dargaville (check the Pistol New Zealand page for their contact details).

speaking of PNZ, there's a 3gun/multigun section there.

The Omni club seems to be taking in a few new members. Try them.

Auckland Shooting Club

Warkworth would be the 1st choice for regular shooting, but yup, there's a waiting list for membership. Man on Man competition in Jan is a hoot. And Hamilton and Waiuku pistol clubs also do some 3Gun, there's just a wee drive to get there.

The multigun currently popular isn't the same 3Gun seen in the US, each stage is shot with only 1 x firearm.But Man on Man comp uses all 3 guns on one stage, check out the video at :

Auckland Shooting Club is trying to set up decent 3Gun ranges, like Rotorua has, so alas you're just going to have to wait.

Thanks for that - great info, do you know if Chris does training courses? or something along those lines? Is it the same Chris thats setting up the Auckland Shooting Club?

Yes it's the same and yes he still does pistol training but shooting options at APC are quite restricted now with only 1 person per range and limited time. Best option is to drop Chris a line, but the shooting season is coming to a peak now with North Island Champs this weekend, South Island Champs next month, then Nationals in November.

Omni use the Auckland Deerstalkers range

From memory Omni are mainly Pistol shooters with a small component of Cowboy shooters .

I have contacted them but a friend who is a member is pretty sure they are full-up.

Actually multigun in NZ is the same (actually similar some NZ specific changes) as the multigun run under the 3-gun nation rules set in the U.S. The distinction is between IPSC 3-gun (one firearm per stage) and the 3-gun Nation multigun (multiple firearms on one stage). Both rules sets exist in NZ however the multigun is pretty new (kind of) and a new RO system is being ironed out due to the complexities of running on of the matches.

At Waiuku there is only a couple of us that "regularly" shoot multigun or 3-gun. To really play the game you will really need your "E" endorcement and your holster qualification. I recommend shooting IPSC before trying multigun off the bat. While not essential it is a more graduated way of doing things. In term of coaching for multigun/3-gun there isn't really anyone that does it as a rule, normally you do your pistol training and a lot of the other stuff is an extension of that. Warkworth has the strongest concentration of capable 3G/multi shooters with a lot knowledge on gear etc.

Is Waiuku currently open to new members?

Is anyone here a member of a club in or around Auckland that preferably shoots pistol, that is taking new members at the moment?
I have emailed a number now and had no relpy at all. Any insight or info much appreciated. It seems everyone is full-up?

Auckland pistol club is always taking members but given the restrictions in place you would really need to ask them what is happening. When I joined you just jumped in to the training right away with other people at varying stages of their training. Usually you were within one to about a max of 5 weeks difference in training.

Since then I think they have moved to different intakes a number of times a year so that everyone in training is at the same level. I can see how that makes sense.

So find out when the next intake is. They do training on saturdays and I have seen new people coming through on the club match days so it must be happening.

It's addictive! I am also building up for multigun, it will add a bit of fun but I will say, for a guy who has always shot rifles the fun is in the pistols for me.
