That went over my head- what did the rod cause?? A rod correctly used will never cause problems. Far more damage is done on average by poorly-used pullthroughs.
Rimfires are a totally different proposition to centrefires when it comes to cleaning. They run at far lower pressures and have a far softer projectile. The dry lube on the projectile has anti-corrosive properties and it takes some rough use or bad storage conditions to make them rust.
The biggest issue is traditionally lead fouling though the copper-wash projectiles may be slightly less prone to fouling. If you feel you -must- clean them, use a solvent aimed at removing lead fouling and firing a few rounds through afterwards may be needed to get them back to their previous zero. Many smallbore guys will shoot a good dozen or more after cleaning before getting back to paper.

Why bother, this 10 shot groups where shoot prone at 100yds off a bipod with a standard 452 American in a 6mph swirling wind. For a non match rifle this plenty accurate!

Helas, they don't all shoot like that!

If you want to do a bit more serious target shooting, have a look at ex club rifles. Lots of Anschutz 1407 and Walthers around. Most of them the barrels are still in pretty good shape.
i bought a 1960's Walther KKM from a clubmate for $300, re-crowned it and put it into a stock that matches my FTR fullbore rifle. It shoots the wings of a fly :-)
Experiment and find what flavour of ammo your rifle likes.

A method that the guys in the USA do , mainly for the 10/22 trype rifles , which they clean the barrel with out taking the bolt , and just use a pull thru type jobbie thru the ejection port with bolt looked back .
Its cheap and alot of them use it & like it , you grab a piece of weedcutter cord , cut it to the lenght you want , on one end cut with sharp blade on 45 degree angle , this enable it to stab thru the 1 inche square patch easily , on the other end melt it into a bit of a blob , this acts as a stop for the patch , push thru the ejection port & pull thru the barrel .
NO need to buy a expensive pull thur , and most prefer this over the store brought jobbies .
