Thread: River to Ranges to sight in rifle?

Has anyone had experience with Rivers to Ranges in Rangiora to sight in their rifle?

I have a Remington 700 ADL model with a Leupold VXIII 3.5-10x40 w/ 1 inch tube. It has Boone and Crocket reticle too so I am looking at taking it to R&R for them to sight in for $100 which I think is pretty reasonable.

I know I can do it myself but I think its worth the $100 for peace of mind, plus I don't have easy access to a range.

Will supply them with some Hornady 145gr ELD-X as the sighting load.

Thoughts?

In my experience rifles that are sighted in for one person don't necessarily shoot to the same poi for another person. Do it yourself

It would give me less piece of mind having someone else sighting my rifle in than sighting it in myself. The point of impact shift between people can be considerable.

Absolutely agree with what has been said point of impact for you cannot be guaranteed

If they're setting it up from scratch, eye relief on the scope would be my biggest concern, but that could be sorted out in advance. Regardless, could you ask to attend when they do it? At the very least, you might learn something. I don't have a spot to zero a rifle either and it's a pain in the arse.

depends how far you plan to shoot. At 100m it won’t make much difference, further than that it’s compounding. Consistency is accuracy and you will shoot your rifle differently to how anyone else will

You could bore sight it at 50yds befor they get their hands on it.Depends where you live with structures around you.You only need a curtain n window open 100mm.

James and the team at R-R are great, I had them sight in and do chronographing on my rifle. Super good blokes and always looked after me, had them adjust the eye relief to my preference before they took it and while everyone shoots different their sighting is right on for me. If you have the skills and space to do it yourself then go for it but they are a great option

There is a range at Mcleans island you can visit as a guest, I think you pay $20.
As others have said there are issues with someone else setting up and zeroing your rifle.
Eye relief needs to be set up to suit you, then as mentioned depending on posture and ergonomics behind the rifle your poi may be different to the person setting it up.
One of the draw cards for RTR settng up and zeroing rifles for clients is that they chrono your ammo in your rifle and then work out your drop charts for you.
James is a good dude and he can shoot very well, but if you do use his service you 100% need to check zero on a range yourself after and then make any fine tuning adjustments, which kinda defeats the purpose of paying someone else $100 to do it for you.

The visitors fee is $25.

Thanks for clarifying that I've only been with a member, couldn't remember what I paid but they have eftpos there which is handy

Bring it to the New Zealand Handloaders Range on our public night, every Tuesday from 7pm. 597 McLeans Island Rd. Range fees are $25.
We have a collimator for bore sighting then will get you on paper at 25m and 100m. R.O's will help mount scopes and show you how to do it yourself.
Bring your shotgun and break a few clays while you're out there.

@BMcB Just out of interest, how busy are these public nights? Do you get hurried along after a few minutes? Or how does it work

Also the NZDA range next door if the Handloaders doesn’t work out - I think next open day is the 10th. 10am till 4pm - $25 for non members. Can get busy but generally some helpful folks around.
