Sako factory ammo one shot, two holes

Was at the range yesterday helping a mate sight in his new Tikka T3 in .308 (shooting 100m)

Had just got it on point shooting real well with Remington Core Lokt in 150Gr, Brought some other ammo along in case the core lokt didn't work out...
One of them being the Sako Gameheads 150gr which I warned said mate the day before not to bother with as I have heard bad things about Sako ammo especially recently.

Anyway couple shots in seems to be shooting okay not grouping as tight as the Remington but good enough, But then on about the 4th as I was spotting I had to stop and think for awhile as I was sure there should have only been 4 bullet holes in the target and not 5, With two both being about 2inches low of the initial 3 shot group.

Just sort of put this down to bad spotting as we had shot quite a few rounds at other targets already and decided I would have a couple more shots to double check this time with two spotters and a fresh target...
Sure enough second shot in we all watched as two new holes appear on target again, both 2inches low one 1inch to the left (pic of this below)

Still wondering if we are all seeing things I have no idea how this could happen but it definitely did, I am wondering if the tips of the lead core are somehow breaking off mid flight or as the round exits the barrel and both still managing to hit target??
has anyone else seen this sort of thing before?

It will be interesting to see what is happening here.

The similar size of the holes suggests maybe core thru one and jacket thru the other, but the jacket wouldn’t even make it to the target let alone hit at the same height.

Odd that both holes are near the point of aim and similar size

Left hole doesn’t look like a bullet hole, tears are only one side and no calibre size smudge of black.

The bits of “shrapnel” marks around the area suggests something was either struck in front of the target of came in from somewhere else.

any long grass around. as others noted that left hole looks like something key holed through it.

or someone else on the range just really wanted to piss you off.

Not being a smarty pants but i have seen this before.
On a second hand target when the little black covering sticker blew off a previous shot. Confused the hell out of me.

Iv completely gone off the Sako Gamehead Pro ammo.
Shoots tiny groups in my 85 Finnlight 30/06 but two things changed for me recently.:
1) Bought two boxes in the last month where the tips fracture off just by touching them.
2) Have seen photos surface on the net of people recovering the projectile and it hasnt opened up and behaved like a FMJ.

Maybe pull one of them out of the case and see if there are 2 bullets in it, or broken bullet

Any chance it was the bullet going in the dirt behind and ricocheting back the way it came? Stones in the dirt can do that occationally.

No I don’t think it’s that….the paper would push back the other way. Both those holes are going through not entry and exit if you know what I mean.

Does anyone know what these bullets are ?
The gamehead pro are Sierra Gamechangers.
If the straight gamehead are also Sierra, perhaps they are the ProHunter ?
I shot some the other day in my 7mm08 and they shot OK. Didnt use the pro asvthey are a different weight and i didnt need tp send an extra $10 a box for that project.

From memory the Gamehead ammo projectiles are copies of the Sierra Gameking made under license by Sako themselves. Don't know what is making the two holes, I'd pick your hitting something Infront of the target though. If the projectile was breaking up in flight I doubt that the holes would be so close and in the same place repeatedly.

I have used and have a stock of 6.5*55 Sako 130 Gamehead Pro and found they are accurate and presented zero problems. Since reading this thread I have thumbed several bullet tips and found nil problems.

It almost looks like the jacket and core came apart in flight which is truly bizarre.

As spud attack said one is clearly a bullet, the hole has fouling in a discrete ring round the outside the left hand one doesn't so has been caused by something else.
The proximity may be complete coincidence. Bullets that fragment usually fly off tangentially from the bore axis, something to do with the 180,000 or so rpm.
If it is from the same bullet it would have needed to be on the central axis of the bore to stay close and therefore the tip or a fragment of it are the best options I feel,

Excellent value for money. Two holes for the price of one.

Gamechangers, shit projectiles, very unreliable expansion. Probably flew to bits

No. They are straight Sierra Gamekings, sourced from Sierra. Hence the issue sourcing these at the moment.
The Gamehead soft point is in house produced.
Superhammerheads are Fusion projectiles
