Thread: Seadown Shooting Complex - Timaru

Oh so very close to operating, website is up and awaiting final sign off from clubs and ranges, a LONG time coming.

The range will host 3 disciplines (Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun) and have 3 respective clubs on 10 ranges within complex, located on 135 Aorangi Road, Washdyke, Timaru.
I'll try remember to post "opening" day here.

Will be great when it's up and running. Please do keep us up to date.

All the credit goes to a few individuals who have spent thousands of hours and $ to stand this range back up. I just held onto a shovel every so often.

It's great to see this range almost up and running for rifle shooting.
Would've happened a long time ago except for a certain person.

I've recieved news of certification being issued.

That's great news after all the negative stuff around ranges closing. Please suggest to the committee that they get TV NEWS in for the opening, to put a positive spin on the legal firearms community meeting its obligations. Maybe even get Nicole McKee along, wearing her COLFO te korowai, to do the official blessing.

Quite some years back our Deerstalkers Club had our Running Boar Range opened by our local MP and Speaker of the House of reps at that time in the early 1980's If I recall. I think it made the papers but possibly not the TV. Regrettably when the main motor failed there was no interest in replacing it. Later the block was sold and a new clubrooms constructed on a new site.
Interestingly even in the late 1970's when the project was started a Specified Departure from the local Council and a backstop around 4.5 metres high was required for a no danger area range. Pretty much what is needed now.

Back in 1974 a new Running Boar range was opened in Cheviot and I was one of the shooters in the opening. The guest of honour was Charlie Upham and he fired the first shots (5 in each direction) with his old single shot Springfield .22 without scoring a single hit. He looked at me and smiled, saying "The bloody Germans couldn't run that fast!"

There must have been a spike of interest in Running Boar Ranges in the early 1970's. Taupo NZDA brought their portable range down to Hastings in 1972 for the Hawkes Bay NZDA Clubs to try out. This sparked the interest and the Hastings Club started planning soon after. The shooting hut had a covered mound next to it so we could shoot 50 metre 4P as well. This was on our own land next to the Roy's Hill Range so we were well blessed. All gone now.

@gundoc I have read both books about Charles Uphan VC & BAR, The Mark of the Lion, and Tom Scott's, Searching for Charlie. Epic tales of bravery, risk taking, victories and captivity. Great yarn about him sneaking up on a couple of poachers on the back of his farm.

Back in the 70-80's NZDA Wellington had a running boar sett up on John Humes farm in Ohariu Valley. I hope that range is still operating? It is literally on the other side of the ridge behind my home in Ngaio. Happy days!

NZDA Marlborough does running boar ( more like fast walk) @ 100yds occasionally. Good fun.

Bumping this back up as I see the 100m rifle range has been certified now so is it open? Has anyone been along and used it or got anymore information on it??

You can apply through the website to join the club - We are not doing casual open days yet, still need a few more inducted members before we can.

The reason for the interest was it was in the Commonwealth games, Sako used to donate rifles as prizes as Finland was also very keen on running boar.
