    Shooting position

    Gidday,

I’m new to “precision” shooting, but have hunted my whole life. I’m currently culling hinds in Scotland which is all head shooting and was hoping for some tips to improve accuracy.

I’m hoping it will be poor technique but lately at the target, shooting of a bipod at 100 yards I’ve been getting a lot of movement in the crosshairs.. sometimes with the cross hairs moving well up to an inch. No matter what I do I can’t keep the bastards steady.

Any tips would be much appreciated

    Cheers

ok 100 yards isnt a big thing, but my 2 cents are (about 1 P for you)
relax, breathe in, dont concentrate too much at this stage. breath 2/3 out, focus then shoot
if you are scoping over a few seconds then its brain fry. of course in the time you are not focusing on the target you should be checking out where your bullet may end up if you miss.
if in doubt leave it out is my motto

Might want to jump over onto the introduction thread (https://www.nzhuntingandshooting.co.nz/f34/) and tell everyone about yourself. People will probably be a lot more forth coming with info. Welcome to the forum

Assuming you are a right handed shooter lying directly behind the rifle with the butt firmly in your shoulder, my first question would be "where is your left hand and what is it doing?

It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

From a purely "check it" point of view, I'd suggest checking that your bipod mount and scope mount screws are all tight.

Also, think about using a bag under the butt of your rifle.

I would be checking @Norway videos on You Tube, he covers this. Thomas has his own stuff under THLR.no

Hello Stefanhope. First thing that springs to mind is inconsistent cheek weld on the stock, then too high a magnification without parallax adjustment or incorrect parallax setting. It would be helpful to get some details of the rifle and optical system you are using.

Depending on the situation, i try tuck my left hand ( make a fist ) beneath the butt of the stock. Right hand shooter

For me the usual cause of movement (specially drifting away as I pull the trigger) is incorrect natural point of aim. While still in full position with your eye behind the sight, Try looking away from the target, feel your inner position and maintain that.then look back through the sight. If you're not lined up on the target, then adjust your body/ hand / rest or bipod position. Often this results in the crosshairs becoming more inert and easy to keep on target during the squeeze off.

Another strategy is to avoid tea and specially espresso coffee for a few hours before shooting. Alcohol and some medicines can have the same effect.

Was your scope recently re-positioned and maybe eye-relief was set for taking a standing shot instead of a prone shot? The scope-to-eye distance is different for the two positions and you might be straining to get the correct eye-relief when prone if the scope was mounted and set for a standing shot. Happened to me once. Better to set up for prone and accommodate when standing than the other way around.

Are you consistently loading the bipod? I was a real shocker for relaxing the loading and found at higher magnification that imparted a fair amount of wobble.

Also if you haven't check there is no slop in bipod mount or even in bipod itself, if you haven't already of course. Personally got away from them and just use my pack now still can't shoot for shit but at least it's consistent!

    Also what ^they said.

Which part of Scotland are you located? I might know one or two people over there who could give some help.

That won't help, use a rear bag. People can only guess, and name things that can go wrong, maybe do a video or start listing what you have and haven't done, details of the rifle etc.
