Hi guys,

What kind of steel would you reccomend for long lasting gongs?

A few options would be good if the supplier doesnt have something particular in stock.

400-500 grade, 80 just doesnt cut it it isnt hard enough.

Is it worthwhile putting say 100mm bolts through it then welding the chain to the bolts so it hangs like / rather than | or is it not worth worrying about ricochets at 180 odd meters? Im just going to hang it off a couple of warratahs.

Drilling it is a real joy!

Sling it off fire hose, no chain strikes to worry about. Also hang at an angle say 10 degrees off vertical so bullet splash is directed into the ground, this cuts out the possibility of riccocets as well. Get the holes cut with a plasma torch or find someone with an anti tank rifle to do it for you.

Old cutting edge off loader buckets or graders work quite well

Shoot them further away then the bullet is arriving on a downward angle.
Use 308win for added effect.

Yeah hanging it off bolts seems to be the easiest way make it hang at an angle, I have hammerd in steel stakes I made that I use for my .22 at an angle and all ricochets and splash are contained on a sheet of newspaper infront of it.

Cant be any worse than putting a new deck on my brothers ute and having to drill through the farmers rust repair welds, cobalt bits and plenty of oil.

Why does no one weld chain part way down the back? That would put a natural angle onto the plate.

I work for a steel company that profile cuts plate. I don't think you'll catch us out of stock in anything if it's just for tiny gongs. It's around a 3-4 day leadtime and for what you guys are shooting the cost would be pretty acceptable I should think. If you get stuck with anything then just give me a PM & I'll see what I can do.

I'm thinking about getting a silhouette done of the mother-in-law out of wear plate. Just waiting for a wide enough remnant.

@Ricochet, if that is an offer to have some targets cut then, depending on price I would be interested in getting some more targets.
