What kind of steel would you reccomend for long lasting gongs?
A few options would be good if the supplier doesnt have something particular in stock.

400-500 grade, 80 just doesnt cut it it isnt hard enough.Quote:

Sling it off fire hose, no chain strikes to worry about. Also hang at an angle say 10 degrees off vertical so bullet splash is directed into the ground, this cuts out the possibility of riccocets as well. Get the holes cut with a plasma torch or find someone with an anti tank rifle to do it for you.
Old cutting edge off loader buckets or graders work quite well
Shoot them further away then the bullet is arriving on a downward angle.
Use 308win for added effect.
Yeah hanging it off bolts seems to be the easiest way make it hang at an angle, I have hammerd in steel stakes I made that I use for my .22 at an angle and all ricochets and splash are contained on a sheet of newspaper infront of it.Quote:

@Ricochet, if that is an offer to have some targets cut then, depending on price I would be interested in getting some more targets.
Just message me size & preferred plate type (I spose 400 wear plate is best, but I'm no expert, around the 10-12mm mark maybe) or drawings if you want something a bit different and a shipping address & I'll get back to you.

Well I was just sighting in my scope at a convenient south auckland gun range. Pak&Save. And one round must have clipped a can and hit this lovely lady. I laughed, she shrugged it off and I took a pic cos she's got nice pins.
Or I just saw the pic & thought it was ironically appropriate considering the name I use here. One of those, I forget which.
We had welded chain at the start. Welds didn't seem to last too long receiving all that shock. Went to d shackles and haven't looked back.Quote:

Yep that looks like a ricochet waiting to happen...
500 grade material ensures you can go thinner. I have quite a few AR400 16mm targets, a couple of AR360 12mm targets (for longer distances), and a few Hardox targets at 12mm thick. I am now looking at AR500 (or equivalent) material at 10mm thick for targets.
