Thread: Sighting 200 yards at 100 yards

I admire those people who sight their rifles in at 100 metres. I always get a little nervous and the spread of my shots makes me doubt my ability.
I prefer to sight in at 25 metres where I get good groupings.
It's hard to find ballistic info for 25 metres though.

I know someone with a 308 who did this. Trajectory says that at 25 and 200 yards the bullet goes through zero and is 2 3/4 in high at 100.
He was happy if he shot 1 inch at 25 yards and called it good.
It wasn't.
First there is parallax to deal with, which moves your sight picture around then 1 inch at 25 is 4 inches at 100 and 8 at 200.
He missed a lot.

Most rifle ranges as you probably know are 100m just wanting to make sure your data is the same as the app like you were shooting at 100yards not meters and scopes in mrad not moa?

My new scopes are mrad but target range still in yards as I am in the process of getting rid of all MOA scopes.

At some stage will replace yards and inch with meter and cm. Relearning

Read many good feedback on strelok. Currently testing the free version. Will get the pro version once they upload my new scope reticle.

Don't fuck around with streloc just get the best and that's applied ballistics.
He has done true bc's for his app.
This is the app to use if your serious about LR.
Then buy the 5700 kestrel elite and your good to go.

I don't particularly want any info. I just admire those people who can consistently get good groupings at longer ranges.

That rule depends on sight height and the particulsr rifle calibre and load. As far as I recall the old original "rule of three" applied to .303 with open iron sights. 3" high at 100yards = zero at 200 yards and approx 3" low at 300yards using military 174 grain ball ammunition. The true drop at 300 was .ore like 8" but for a body shot at a red deer it was good enough. The height of a scope mount above the bore wil alter the rule numbers considerably.

the rule of three has been posted above......scope sighted rifle with assumtion scope is 1 1/2" above bore.

Not based on what you have said. "I dialed the scope 2cm below POI at 100 yards."

If you want to be zeroed for 200yds then your POI needs to be 20mm or 2cm above the POA.

What was your POA in the picture attached? If it was the center of the target then you are zeroed for 200yds but I would come left 1cm

Yes, it was center of the target.

Did not adjust windage because the wind was strong and erratic.

@sheep fair enough mate. Wind should not effect the 308 that much though and at 200 yards your error to the right doubles so I personally would adjust half that to the left .1 mrad and be done with it.

Solid advice re AB if you have the $$, the phone app is about $40 and worth the investment.

Yeah mate Mean Point of Impact MPI is 1cm low so your on the money
