Silencer Thread - which is best???

Hey team,

I am in need of your recommendations, experience and expertise.

I have always been an 'ear pro' shooter (electronic muffs or ear plugs), but now I plan to silence the bigger boom sticks (my 308 at this stage).

In short what thread are y'all using for 30 cal rifles?.....

Does it matter?.....

Is there a more popular/common thread type? Do better brands/suppliers favour a specific thread pitch (metric/imperial) etc

14x1 is commonly used on a lot of hunting rifles, in reality it's about leaving as much meat as possible around the bore. More meat aroubd the bore means stronger basically.
Some heavier barreled rifles will allow 5/8×24
I have 14x1 on my 308 and 223 it seems to work well for me and is a common thread which can help if buying second hand suppressors.

Ive got a 30cal soppressor with 14x1 I get every barrel threaded for that then the one suppressor fits all my rifles

I've threaded all my own barrels, the 7mm-08 had a 18mm barrel so I went with M14x1. For and for my .22 rimfires I used the more old fashioned 1/2*20UNF as they only had 15mm barrels and the smaller thread allows for a larger shoulder for the suppressor to butt up against.

I have cut 7 so far this week and am tending more towards 14 x 1 for 30 Cal but generally go for as large as you can get whilst allowing for a decent shoulder (1mm min)

Depends on the barrel diameter but most will get to 14 x 1.

There is also a theory that the more you turn down the barrel at the muzzle tip, the less constrained the steel is and you can get an expanded bore. Yeah maybe very small but that's the theory.
May apply more to button rifling than cut, I dunno.

Has anyone checked with pin gauges the bore before and after threading?

I checked and there was no difference after threading. I relive the suppressor and don't undercut the barrel thread, but I don't really think even that would make any difference.

It doesn't usually matter the exact thread size - what is important is the meat left on the barrel wall, the accuracy and quality of the job, squareness to the bore and concentricity with the barrel's bore (i.e. not on the piss or more meat on one side of the bore than the other) and also the amount of shoulder for the suppressor to contact on. Also it needs to fit the suppressor with identical thread specs and almost an interference fit.

Yeah the diameter of the barrel is what matters. From a mechanical perspective, the best thread to use is the fattest one you can use that still gives a good shoulder for the suppressor to tighten up against.

So that could be amything like 1/2x28, 9/16x24, 5/8x24, M14, or M18 depending your barrel.

Pommy is onto it. The diameter of your barrel determines the diameter of your thread. Subtract 1.5mm from your barrels outside diameter at the crown, then go for the next size thread under that diameter.

Thats the best size thread.

The yanks are doing their very best to "Standardise" on 1/2" or 5/8". If money is going to be an issue, choose one of these. Not the best choice, just the cheaper option.
