@LMcNab, could you post a photo of the rear of the tire please, how you mounted the gong and what material the white area is ?

The whole gong is actually an old used Plough colter with an offcut piece of Bisalloy welded over the hole in the center. The white area is the colter, which is not as thick as you would generally like for a shooting target but has held up to a fair old beating so far, mostly with my 223. They don't like magnums however and have a few holes from a couple of friends of mine. They are also getting a bit roughed up by my 308 and will need to be retired to 223 only soon and I will get some thicker ones made at the local engineers.
To mount the gongs I welded a great big bolt onto the back of the bisalloy and bolted a piece of mild steel to it which just goes through a hole I cut in the tire (that part is harder than it sounds, a grinder and a firm grip is needed), once it is through the hole I just bent it over and the job was done. It's not elegant but is very effective. With the new gongs I will probably get holes in them for hanging with either bent rod or chains as my welding has a habit of falling apart!
I will chuck up some more detailed photos tomorrow. Not sure I could get away with sneaking off to do that today!!!
