    Really wanna get down here
There's a range even closer to you, the Malvern Rifle Club shoots on a farm range on Malvern Hills Road on most Saturday afternoons from October to May each year. We shoot from 300 yards to 900 yards.

Setup from 1 pm shooting starts at 1.30 pm. Visitors welcome.

You are effectively relying on a couple of microphones, quite close together (6 or 8 inch stalk), to pick up the sonic crack. In theory this is fine, but when you start adding in vertical angles due to bullet drop, and horizontal angles due to target placement and wind, things get a bit iffy.

Using the displayed speed to get a rough idea of your ES or SD is fine, but as an accurate measure of actual speed, I would look to Magnetospeed or Labradar.
A cobber is having issues with his dope or maybe loads at extreme ranges - they are as predicted out to 1200M or so then not so much. I was wondering if an at target measurement well out might show up what is happening. (and before ya'all wade in, bear in mind this is no newbie, he's one of the South Is's top LR match shooters, so he knows his schit)

When you say he is a top "LR match" shooter, do you mean F-class ?

Beyond 1200m he is likely to be running into trans-sonic issues. Normal BCs don't work so well out at that range. Suggest that he has a look at the Litz custom drag curves.

We used to run a "superlongs" comp in the Wairarapa. At 1000yds, everyone was still on the target. At 1100 yds, around 1/4 of the field dropped away. At 1200 yds, only a few of the competitors managed to get the majority of a 10 shot string on the target.

    As @ebf said.
I fired two full details with my F Class 284 with either my old Magnetospeed attached or maybe it was the LabRadar, I cannot remember which. The results I recorded just didn't gel with the Silver Mountain velocities. Taken into account obviously that the velocity at the target will have dropped I had the Silver Mountain on a couple of shots indicating a raised relationship whereas the shot in question had a lower velocity relative to those ever side of it. ie going opposites. That's not to say my chronograph didn't give a dodgy read out but generally an unexpected low velocity shot gives a lower hit on the target, which is what I saw. So, I would tend to be happy with either the MS or LR indicated velocity.

The targets have to be set up exactly to line up with bullet entry. Also, if the target are not properly secured wind moving the frame around can give variable results.

Having said that, apparently the new Silver Mountain Solo units (twin mics/enganced detection) are apparently much better displaying more realistic velocities. @6×47 ?

( query regarding Solo velocity readings)
Correct though they are still rather at variance with the best calculated vels based on accurate chrono readings (Oehler 43) and matched drops

@zimmer, we use a Solo at a non-NRA club. The system has 8 microphones compared to 5 for the traditional Silver Mountain.

In the traditional it is 4 on the face, with 1 stand-off (chronograph). On the Solo it is 4 on the face, and 4 standoff. If the 4 standoff units are independently picking up sonic crack, the unit should theoretically be able to calculate angle of attack of the shot. Who knows if that is actually happening in the software.

On Kongsberg or Suis Ascor etc with a dual membrane system, angle of attack is very much part of the calculation.

His problem is a bit out of my depth, but he's using a Labradar and Kestrel and shoots out to 1600 regularly so its a matter of identifying what particular phenomena he is experiencing. He told me his projectiles are still at 1600 -1800 fps (its a 7mm Rem Mag) when this is happening so its not the trans-sonic thing . . . .

We run the solo's at Te Puke as well, they are a step up from the older versions and where you used to get variance target to target they all seem to read very similar, but as said the velocity doesnt equate to what it should be in theory from leaving the barrel.
The es and sd are apples to apples though from the range end chronographs.... within a tolerance. I think in the soft ware you can distinguish angled ( other shooters ) shots It used to come up from time to time, lately though it doesnt seem to warn of foreign shots/.... i could be wrong the season is early and I havent shot much.

I got similar ES and SD to muzzle using an F1 Chrony (smaller SD actually 14.8 at 600 yd vs 21.4 at muzzle so could easily be some extra variance in the Chrony).

Terminal velocity at 600 yd was 49 f/s less on Te Puke Silver Mountain system than predicted by Strelok from my F1 Chrony muzzle (3m) velocities. I think the MV measured by the Chrony is likely pretty close as the come up adjustment needed was within 0.1 mRad of Strelok's prediction based on the MV.

This is an example of the testing a hunter can do at a well set up NRA range.

I had the same thing. Edited once but got a white dialog box on second attempt, hence a few typos left in .

Sounds like the Ashburton Sweep this weekend will have some great prizes up for grabs. Will be a good crew of hunter/prs/ feild shooters there too.

Was a great turn out of PRS/ practical shooters yesterday. 12 out of 27 shooters. All shot very well too in very testing conditions.

Was an great turn out for the Ashburton sweepstake and great scores by the precision rifles- top 3 overall scores
The next big local comp is the Canterbury spring meeting held at Malvern. Last years one had us 308 guys with 16moa windage at 900 yards
