    Unusual range pickup

While walking around waiting for sporting clays to start today, I noticed a couple of unusual brass cases lying on the range.

Not often that I come across brass that I can't identify, but this stuff had me stumped until I got home to do some research...

Markings on the base are "Kynoch 401 S.L."

Turns out to be 401 Winchester Self Loading:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.401_W...r_Self-Loading

So someone probably was playing with a 1910 a while ago:

Someone been disposing of their banned ammo using a custom chambered Ammunition disposal device that disposes of the ammo, one round at a time........

Something like this should not be crushed because of a poorly thought out left wing agenda....that in itself is a crime. Both the ammo and the rifle are pieces of history.

Number of shots doesn't matter, ALL centrefire semis are prohibited.

The cartridge was discontinued in the mid 30s in America. The english made it into the 60s so its old stuff. Interesting find though.
The whole self loading family were poorly recieved and short lived, although the 35 sl was evidently partial inspiration for the 30 m1 carbine.

These cartridges on your range are sadly the last shipwreck evidence washed up from that rifle. It may already have been "bought back". Good post, but reading it makes you feel sad and angry.

You should put it in your cartridge collection! I pick up all sorts of kick knacks and have a small bag of the stuff.

Dropped my lovely 1910 401 off yesterday. Expect it WAS the best condition one in NZ - it would have fired less than 20 shots (mainly by me) since manufacture.

I had and still have dies and bullet swagers plus Bertram brass (all up about $700 worth) that won’t be super useful for much!

Also dropped off a mint/unfired Winchester M100 in 243 Win.

    Bugga...
